- 3 - I've a pretty taste for paradox.
[It starts in the subconscious, below the radar. A snatch of a tune that runs around his head and an occasional tap of his foot. It isn't long before he is humming. It's a quirky tune, fast paced. His fingers start to tap out the rhythm of the libretto on the counter in the laboratory. It's building and the humming he makes changes to the odd spoken word under his breath, until it's too much and it has to be let out, haltingly at first, then increasing in strength.]
♬ I am the very model of a modern Major-General,
I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical
From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical;
I'm very well acquainted, too, with matters mathematical,
I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical,
About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news,
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse.
[That's it. The Doctor is cooking on gas. He spins around on his lab chair and he jumps up, off at a brisk walk through the TARDIS. Good thing the journal is with him, yes?]
♬ I'm very good at integral and differential calculus;
I know the scientific names of beings animalculous:
In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.
♬ I know our mythic history, King Arthur's and Sir Caradoc's;
I answer hard acrostics, I've a pretty taste for paradox,
I quote in elegiacs all the crimes of Heliogabalus,
In conics I can floor peculiarities parabolous;
I can tell undoubted Raphaels from Gerard Dows and Zoffanies,
I know the croaking chorus from The Frogs of Aristophanes!
Then I can hum a fugue of which I've heard the music's din afore,
And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore.
♬ Then I can write a washing bill in Babylonic cuneiform,
And tell you ev'ry detail of Caractacus's uniform:
In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.
♬ In fact, when I know what is meant by "mamelon" and "ravelin",
When I can tell at sight a Mauser rifle from a javelin,
When such affairs as sorties and surprises I'm more wary at,
And when I know precisely what is meant by "commissariat",
When I have learnt what progress has been made in modern gunnery,
When I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery—
In short, when I've a smattering of elemental strategy—
You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a-gee.
♬ For my military knowledge, though I'm plucky and adventury,
Has only been brought down to the beginning of the century;
But still, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.
[By the time he's finished he has reached the console room and there is stunned silence for thirty seconds.]
...Good heavens. At least it wasn't Three Little Maids From School.

Thank you, Hermione. So glad I could entertain. I'm sure some have had ruder welcomes.

Happy April Fools Day, Doctor.

Thank you, Nora. Beautiful day for it, isn't it?
[OK, so her laughter is infectious.] All right. That could have been much worse.
OMG That's hysterical!!
It is, yeah. The castle usually does something weird for the day, though it skipped the singing last year. At least you're not alone, right?
Isn't it?!

I might make an exception for a duet one day, though. [Yes, he implies her. Show tunes though, nothing age inappropriate. He could get behind that.]

<3 You kill me :D
Ah... I know one called A Chronic Hysteresis. That's about similar, isn't it?
[Pause. Pause.
Teasing...]

The song is from Earth in fact. A musical from the late 1800's. I'll have to slip back one day and take in its debut.
How are you, Peter?

I'm still here so I guess I'm doing okay. How about yourself?
