[Many people will recognize who this is by the fact that a song begins to play without spoken preamble - a soft saxophone number - that continues all the way to the end before he speaks up. Gren isn't exactly a shy person, but the music always spoke better than he could, and it seemed like the best way he begin what comes next]

It's been a long time, folks. Almost three years, for me, but there's something I gotta do. I have to go, and I'm not sure I'm gonna come back.

[It had taken some time for him to discover that Spike had beat feet into the Dead Zone, and not very long after that for Vicious to decide he was going to follow, and Gren wasn't going to get left behind for anything. Maybe it was time. The castle had given him some gifts that were beyond priceless, and given him wounds he'd never recover from. Such was life.]

My room will still be open to anyone. If anything, someone might want to take care of the lizard. Consider him the mascot.

[There's a faint clicking sound as he slides his saxophone into the case and closes it]

Thanks for everything and watch out for each other. That's all we really have to hold onto.

[And, with that, Gren will hang about for a little while longer before he shoves the journal into his bag, which is loaded with supplies and clothes. Wearing a long coat against the early fall chill, the musician pulls the heavy pack onto his back and begins what will be his last trek down into the lobby to meet his comrade.]

[Any radios and journals open this afternoon are suddenly treated to a soulful saxophone solo. There's something bittersweet to it, because that's what life in Paradisa is to the musician - he's alive and the loneliness he's carried in his heart for so long is, for the most part, gone, but the castle constantly found a way to reopen new wounds.

But not today. He can finally play again, and he's doing it on air for the first time because he feels like it. A luxury of the (mostly free) and the living.

Eventually he finishes, pauses to take a long drink, and clears his throat.

There was a time when I could do that every night, although usually I could see my audience...

Anyway, before I get to playing some more music, I wanted to remind everyone that room 205 is free and open to use to anyone that might want to play something of their own. The equipment is all here, and if you want to receive the broadcast signal on something other than your journal, all you need to do is wish up a short-range radio.

So, any other musicians in the house?

[This afternoon finds Gren just outside the castle courtyard, by the road that leads into town. He stands, arranging a bunch of scrolls of thick paper inside a saddlebag attached to the flank of a borrowed horse before he pulls out his journal from another pocket, pats the stallion on the nose, and sits down to dictate a message]

So the weather's finally cleared up and I thought I'd mention again that I'm starting up a little courier business. Anything within the city is five caisos, and between there and the castle is ten. I'll move whatever you like, no questions asked.

And hey, since couriers seem to be a lot bigger in the city since everything changed, I might even look to partner up with someone. Anyone who can ride a horse or can get around pretty quick would be good. I might even be able to use some kind of clerk who can take orders or messages, if this goes well enough.

[Gren wonders, abstractly, if the universe is out to get him. And then he remembers that in Paradisa, this is actually true.

The man sits half slumped on the bench of the baby grand piano in the parlor, one long leg stuck off one side of the bench and one arm curled on the top of the lid, his eyes staring down at the keys.

He'd expected whatever madness that had come over Vicious and Spike to end after the first of the month, but it hadn't, leaving him feeling oddly...lost. It wasn't as if anybody had died or gone home or turned into a different person entirely. He'd known that the two were friends once, but deep down maybe he never really believed it. But now he's seeing it for himself and all part of him wants is to keep Vicious to himself. Another part of him, however, is intrigued by this glimpse into the past. Into the things that might have been. And he's not sure which version he wants more.

[Away from Spike and Vicious]

Has the castle ever given you glimpse into the past or a possible future? Or have you ever just wondered what your life would be like if certain things had gone differently? Maybe the enemies you have would be your friends, or vice versa...

[He finds himself trailing a finger over the shiny surface as he speaks, tracing the edges of the keys with faint longing]

Or maybe I'm just thinking about this too hard.

[Some slightly masochistic impulse makes him idly try a small scale on the keys, and notes ring out in perfect rhythm before stopping with the sound of an indrawn breath. It could be a fluke, but he doesn't think the castle believes in those. The scale plays again, immediately transforming into the opening chords of a soft, slightly forlorn melody.

Gren lets out a sound that's half laugh and half sob, and he covers his mouth for a few long moments as it truly sinks in at last. This thing he'd been denied for over two years of his life. He could reach it again. He could be whole.

...I can play.

[And with a smaller laugh, giddy and full of disbelief, he starts to do just that. This time the tune is exultant and bittersweet. And it keeps playing as he pauses briefly to dictate another message -]

[To Spike and Vicious]

You guys doing anything tonight? I have something to celebrate.

[Going to the gun range is always a decent way to kill time and clear his head from time to time, and even occasionally blow off steam. Thankfully, that didn't happen too much, but even the even-tempered Gren needed to shoot something now and then.

Today his aim is just recreation, but minutes after arriving, he realizes something is very very wrong. What normally feels almost as natural as breathing becomes an actual struggle. He can't keep hold of the gun at all. The trigger seems to twitch of his grip every time he tries to squeeze it, and when he even manages that, he can only fire wildly off course where his arm used to be deadly accurate.

What is going on?

[He sets the gun down with a heavy thud, not realizing his journal had fallen open at his feet, as he presses a hand to his face in actual frustration]

[written and filtered to anyone who has gained a second loss or had a loss change]

[Later, once he turns back to his apartment in town, he opens the journal and hesitantly writes a message]

To anyone that has ever gotten a different loss, what prompted the change for you? How did you know anything was different?

Because I think I might have a second one, but I'm not sure why. Got knocked out for a few weeks, but I didn't die. Not sure if the castle would punish me for something it made happen in the first place.

I just need to make sense of this.

So, if anyone has wondered where the music's been, I apparently took an extra long nap courtesy of the castle and came just in time to see that it's sense of humor in terms of Valentine's Day hasn't changed yet. I'm not sure I would have minded letting me sleep that extra day, but on the other hand, I appreciate not having to do the Sleeping Beauty impression for much longer.

It sounds like I might not have been the only one that had something strange happen to them during lunar new year. Or was it just me?

Only here would it be a regular occurrence for people to act completely crazy. So much so that some of us just brush it off. You get a lot of experience in the art of apologizing, and just as much experience trusting that those apologies are real. Because you can't always know whether a person that tried to take a shot at you really meant to do that. The castle can make a convenient scapegoat. Blaming it for all your mistakes isn't possible...but it's sure easy to do when it turns out to be true so much of the time.

What I'm saying is, it's probably best to cut people slack around here, because next time the person acting like an idiot could be you.

[That's a not-so-subtle kind-of apology to the person he really did take a shot at a couple of weeks ago. But the rest of the message is true. The castle probably was to blame for Spike shooting Vicious a few months ago. He'd been angry regardless, and the castle had taken advantage of that.

[Gren is running a little short on words today until he comes into the castle to find the lobby strewn with bright lanterns and paintings. He pauses a moment to examine one of the lanterns, touching it fondly and remembering his life before this, and suddenly he finds his inspiration.

A few hours later, he's back in his castle room with a stack of jazz cd's and a purpose. Sometime that evening he starts up a playlist and, after the first songs plays, he pauses to interject a little message

It's hard to know how to start one of these when the castle has made one of it's usual attempts at putting some of us in the ground a little while. Which is pretty rude, if you ask me. It's not like we need the reminding that we're living on borrowed time here in a sense. For some of us, this really is our last gasp. This life is all we have.

And now that it looks like the castle is gearing up for lunar new year, I'm guessing that's maybe the point. Even if you have something to go back to, what happens here exists in a bubble all it's own. For those of you that don't know, lunar new year is about wiping the slate clean, and going into the new year with no baggage. Dust off those cobwebs, empty out those closets, settle those debts, and balance the books.

With that said, enjoy the music. The jazz is for you, Spike. But I owe you more than just a playlist. But it wouldn't seem right unless I said in person so...

[And that's all, really. He doesn't think Spike will really answer a summons, so he lets the music play on it's own, checks his pistol, and slips it into his waistband at his back as he goes searching for the bounty hunter. He isn't really thinking about it. It's just something he has to do...]

[Gren discovers two things when he makes a pit stop at his castle room during a supply run: a full complement of broadcasting equipment and, more bizarrely, a lizard. He makes the connection that the equipment was Mark's (and thus, also the lizard), though he isn't sure why it would all find it's way here now, when the former castle DJ had left some time ago.

He ponders this mystery as he cleans up the area and comes to a decision.

I'm not sure why, but it looks like I've inherited Hard Harry's old sound equipment in addition to his position as castle DJ. But honestly, it looks like I'm not the only one out here who has music they want to share or things they want to say, and there's no reason this all has to fall to one person.

So here's the deal.

Since I don't actually stay in my room in the castle very often, I'm opening it up to everyone who wants to take a spin in the DJ chair or even play us some live music, I don't know. Consider it an open forum.

It's room 205. I'll put a sign up. It's still going to be my room just in case the castle decides it wants me back here, so don't mess with things too much, and clean up when you're done. Other than that? Have fun.

[A short pause]

Oh, and does anyone know anything about lizards?

[When he's finished here, Gren will slap a sign under his name plate that reads RADIO PARADISA and make a few more stops in the castle - the music room, the library (to research lizards), and the kitchen, before heading back out to town. Feel free to catch him anywhere for kisses. :3]

[As is customary with Gren's broadcasts, the first song starts to play and doesn't stop until it's through before speaking]

When I was younger, I used to dream of traveling. I never had a destination in mind. No exotic city I wanted to spend my life in. That never mattered to me so much as the journey itself, and the freedom that it meant that I would have to be able to do so. I just wanted to see what was out there, and meet people who lived differently than myself. Perspective, I guess...

[He pauses. The reality had turned out rather less glamorous that he might once have imagined as an idealistic youth, but that's what came of financing your travels by enlisting in the army. More the fool he.]

Here, travel takes on a whole new meaning. We're all travelers here without intention. We didn't have time to pack our bags. We didn't buy any tickets. But here we are anyway. And we don't even have to travel to exotic places. Paradisa brings them to us. Thought about one way it's kind of a gift. Where I come from, Florence is no more real than a note in a history book. It means a lot more now. I know a lot of people that would never have the means to travel in their own world. On the other hand, it's a little like cheating the journey out of the whole trip. There's no road dust on your shoes or kinks to stretch out of your back from a long ride. Again, we're just...there.

Of course, there's still the opportunity for the real thing. A lot of folks have left us in recent months, but not in the usual way. Packed their bags and headed off into the wild. And if you're tired of getting kicked around, it certainly seems like an option now that we know there's a whole town out there. Out of sight, but never really out of mind, I think. But that's a choice every one of us has to make.

I'm sure of some of you realized our esteemed weekly DJ was among those people, so I'm afraid you're stuck with me in the meantime.

But since I'm on the topic, why don't I open things up a little - no reason for me to do all the talking after all. For the people listening, why don't you tell me your travel stories? Either back home or places Paradisa has sent you. Where have you been and what have you seen? Or tell me where you always wanted to go, but never got the chance.

While you all thing that over, here a little traveling music, and a send-off to Hard Harry, our former radio host. If you're out there listening, buddy, this is for you. [And this song begins to play before the music continues more or less interrupted.]

((For those interested, here is the rest of the themed selections for the evening:
Big Mama Thornton - Rolling Stone, Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run, The Who - Leaving Here, Billy Joel - Travelin Prayer, Frank Sinatra - Come Fly With Me, The Animals - We Gotta Get Out Of this Place, David Gray - Sail Away, Iggy Pop - The Passenger, Van Morrison - Bright Side of the Road

[The radio and journals crackle to life this evening - not with the familiar sound (to some) of Leonard Cohen - but this bluesy melody. Gren doesn't like to interrupt the music, though, so he let's it play all the way through first, before he starts to speak]

I think one of the most appealing things about the blues isn't just it's construction, in a technical sense, but the feel of the thing. It's about owning your pain. It's about putting it out there into the universe so that we can really know that when it comes to pain and loss and suffering, we aren't at all alone.

And that's definitely true here. Because we've all lost something. At least for coming here, but maybe even before, or even after. Especially recently. But that's not just a trademark of this place. It's a trademark of living, for better or worse.

Not that this place is an amusement park or anything. But we're all stuck in the same ride. And while we're all focusing on everything we've lost lately, there's been a lot of living going on. Fall started up. Which mean a lot of us were thinking about food. Somebody else played us some music. And at least four people had a birthday. I'd say there's a lot of life in us yet.

By the way, this is Gren, taking over for our apparently absent resident DJ, Hard Harry. He hasn't left the castle, as far as I can tell, but if anybody does know where he is, I'm sure some of us would be happy to know he's safe and sound. Sorry for the lack of stage name. I usually just let the music do the talking for me.

Things have been kinda irregular for the last couple of weeks, so I thought I'd officially try to welcome everyone he's missed, so here goes.

The Doctor...which one is it now?...Equius, Sonata, Harry, Emma, Jesse, Aziraphale, Yuuko, Dean, Aaron, Newt, Blue, and Sion...welcome to Cair Paradisa...sorry, you'll have to see my compatriot for the rude nicknames. Or ask a friend. I'm sure you can find one out here, somewhere.

[And then the music will continue without further comment...]

So I've spent the last couple of months learning to ride a horse. I wouldn't call myself an expert, but steady enough that I might mention the biggest reason I decided to try this out. Someone mentioned awhile back that there was no way to get food delivery from town to the castle, but this way I can offer that. And not just food either. Anything you want sent to the castle, or delivered to town, I could do.

This is more of a test run for now, to see how much interest I get.

You're probably going to be hearing a lot of chatter over the journals over this, but I figure some of you could use the info. So, listen up, because this might be important.

As far as I can tell, there's just the two ships - the Lewis and Clark and the Event Horizon. According to the messages in here, this vessel was sent out to rescue the Event Horizon. That's you guys in the big ship over there. It also says here that the Event Horizon is a scientific vessel and has something called a gravity core, which generates a black hole in order to makes jumps through space.

I'm not going to pretend I'm a scientist, so I don't know how it works or if it's even possible, but something like that can't be safe. And if that ship went through enough trauma to need a rescue, then who knows what shape it's in.

My point is, whatever the gravity core is, my advice is to steer clear.

Ok, so, not so theoretically, if I have nothing but movie theater food to eat, how would I make it at least a little interesting? There has to be some combinations people don't usually try. Probably because the theater would never let you. Or possibly because they're insane.
