I finally finished it; the painting. I don't know if you can still remember this wherever you are, but I said I'd make sure they remember Rue. I was going to surprise you with it. Katniss too. I guess I can still surprise her, but it might upset her too... She's been taking you going home really hard. Not that I don't care. It's the opposite, in fact.

I just... I guess I'm not very good at wearing that part of my heart on my sleeve. I always respected that about you. When something really hurt you, you just let it out, and it was over with. Like when we first met in the kitchen with Bucky. You were hurting then, but you weren't ashamed of it.

... I'm rambling now, aren't I? [He laughs quietly.] I just wanted to keep you posted. If you're back home Peeta, I hope you found a way to be okay and that you're safe. If you're still here somewhere... I hope you're with Bucky. He'll take good care of you. [A beat.] Tell him I say hi... and that he's still a jerk.

[Since he can't bring himself to say goodbye, Steve will end it there.]

[the breath goes out of him in a rush. he knew that with the journals "malfunctioning" like this, he was bound to see all sorts of things that would make his heart hurt, but ... somehow, this wasn't anything he had been expecting to see. he'd thought that he and Katniss were the only ones who still thought about her, their little flower girl who wasn't afraid of much at all and loved to climb trees and learn all she could about the world...

the grief that washes over him is fresh, and he knows that it must be for this guy, too, especially since he clearly knows what she went back to. he can't bring himself to speak: it doesn't seem like it would be right. instead, he writes, carefully]

Yeah... it wasn't for very long. We ended up in the same family when we were all at the lake. She was a really good kid.

She went through 'em all in like, a week.

[Dairine had already noticed that the filters weren't working. So Dairine mentally braced herself to see some embarrassing tmi stuff before opening the journal. She had not prepared herself for this.

Dairine's heart lodges in her throat, as the grief she's been holding off comes rushing back. Rue, Bucky, Peeta... All the people she cared for and never got to say goodbye. She hasn't written to Peeta yet. Or Alan.

...Maybe later. For now, Dairine picks up a pen and writes, not trusting her voice.]

He'll never not be a jerk.
