Earth was getting used up, there were famines and worse. What were we going to do? Just go quietly extinct?
Just let a bunch of empty planets sit there and gather dust?
I don't know anything about your species, but humans weren't about to let their kids starve so Mars could stay pristine.
The colonies aren't perfect... but after five hundred years we're still here.
