05 DNA Strands - The Apocalypse Cometh

[Though he'd gone to sleep a young man, Evan Sabahnur, nicknamed "Apocalypse" by the staff (due to the popular belief that it would take no less to wake him up) rouses from his sumber, groaning as the infirmities of his advanced age make themselves known to him.]

Ugh. Did we win? Do mutants rule the earth yet? Hardly seems worth waking up if not. Someone wanna tell me where those ingrate children of mine moved me? I went to sleep in a goddamn hospital, didn't expect to wake up with a hospice nurse givin' me my last rites.

[Grouchy old mutant is grouchy. For now, he's confined to his room while the staff flit about, checking his condition, but eventually he'll be out and about to menace the rest of the population (with idle threats and weakly shaken fists. He doesn't dare try to use his mutant shapeshifting powers, since he's not sure if he can still go back to the way he was).]

I suppose so. This one had the ability to turn skin into organic steel. Nothing could touch him unless he wanted it to. They called him the Colossus.

As long as I'm on top when all's said and done, it's not so bad. The wonderful thing about getting old's that not much bothers you any more.

Oh, it was. He was a hero among heroes, in his day. Had a bit of a mean streak, but that's what happens when your powers cut you off from people.

Do you? You're what, 25? Maybe 30? Just wait until you reach 100, then you can talk to me about getting old.

Oh yeah? There's a lot more to you than there seems, isn't there? Never can tell about some people. Not everyone's blessed with a gene that makes their skin gray, so as to make their blood status apparent for all to see. Then again, mine's old blood, things get diluted as the generations pass.

I'd be curious to meet your father some day, find out how far the apple fell from the tree. You ought to be proud of what sets you apart, makes you better than the average man. I'm all for keeping a low profile when things get hairy, but not if it means denying what you really are.

Oh, everyone's got some darkness in their past. Some more than others. I'm sure your old man did what he thought was best, even if by questionable means.

So what made you wanna get into nursing? Can't be for the pleasurable company, I'd wager. [He laughs.]

It's a long and personal story. The short version is I wanted to help people, and being a nurse was the best way I could.

You forget, that wasn't my choice. There's also the matter of attracting too much attention to yourself, which can be counterproductive, if your aim is to rule a people who might not like you much. It's about knowing your audience.

Yeah, well, most people don't like being ruled. And you should try to use your powers for something a little less sinister.

You'd be surprised. Most people wouldn't know what to do with themselves if they didn't have someone telling them what to do. That's how governments get started.

You needn't concern yourself with me as a conqueror. My time's long over, aside of waiting out my family's ultimate self-destruction. my powers aren't good for much but parlor tricks, now.
