white_emperor: Spook is less confusing. (Wait what how where-)

3 - Action/Dictated - And so I come to the focus of my argument.

[ Elend's voice sound quite a bit like he's sitting in a tree. Rustling leaves and all that in the background. ]

I have a few questions, and I think quite a few of them will sound odder than others. Does anyone know where I can find some ... raw metal? Well, it needs to be the made stuff, but some pewter. And not this stuff with, ah, silver in it. I'm looking for 91 percent tin to 9 percent lead. And bronze that is 75 percent copper and 25 percent tin. And maybe some duralumin too - 96 percent aluminum, 4 percent copper. They don't need to be in particularly large amounts.

And the odd questions- Are most of your worlds like this? Blue sky, lots of green things, yellow sun, bright... white thing at night? Anyone from anywhere- ah, oops

[ that would be the sound of the journal falling and hitting something that shakes. ]

And I'd just gotten the hang of balance too...

[ Elend isn't exactly in the tree. He's floating, arms out for balance, over one side of the tree. His journal is in the branches quite a bit lower, but if he talks loudly maybe it will catch well. As for how he's up there... Well, searching might show some cutlery on the ground under him. ]

The... bright white thing at night would be a moon.

I have yet to hear of someone who has been from anything different. Or at least drastically so.

I suppose, though now I have to ask - what color is the sky in your world?

Really? But it's the moon.

[The concept of it not being there at all is just mind boggling.]

Ash clouds? Like, from fires? That sort of ash?

So there is no moon in your world then?

And dare I ask what those are?

Uh, is there a reason you don't just wish for it?

Hasn't run out in six years of constant use, but if you're that concerned you could try some of the smithies in town. They pretty much only have basic things, though.

Far as your other question, all worlds aren't like this by a long shot. Not anymore, anyway. Overall, though? Pretty damn common.

action!

[Clow mostly heard that in passing, as he is out enjoying the hints of spring starting to show up. He glances up at the young man who spoke]

My understanding is that most worlds are like this, coloration-wise. Though people don't tend to float in the air.

[Unless said people are him, but Clow considers himself an exception to every rule]

Yeah. It did. [Though he won't elaborate unless pressed. Glassing a world is...nothing pleasant.]

You guys all live indoors where you're from, or what? Scorched atmosphere?
encryptedlock: (badassitude)

[personal profile] encryptedlock 2013-03-10 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Sounds like you have either a scorched atmosphere, or way more volcanic activity than most places.

Atmosphere means everything that's in the air around us. What makes the sky blue, here. In places with a lot of dust or debris in the atmosphere, it's more likely to be orange or red or even grey. Because the air's really clear here, we can see things that are beyond it - the sun, moon, stars....

You'll get used to it - though no doubt you'll have no few people asking you about your own world, if it's so different from this one.

I'm more curious as to whether you're using magic or technology for that little trick myself.

If you want a basic idea of how it works, check out some of the astronomy books in the kids' section of the library. Once you know the terminology, you can look at some of the more complex works if you're interested. But that's essentially right - the ash probably blocks your view of everything else in the atmosphere. If it were to clear up, this would all seem normal to you.

Good luck with that - and with finding that metal.

[He doesn't ask what this guy needs specific alloy for. After all, he'd needed metals just as specific when he needed to make repairs to his vehicles. Everyone had reasons.]

How odd... it makes me wonder about the flow of ocean tides then, and how do you count the passing of the months and the seasons?
legacydeck: (intrigued)

[personal profile] legacydeck 2013-03-11 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Technology would be machines. Science. Magic generally covers other powers those don't - though we could argue about distinction, I suppose. But I'm more interested in hearing more about this 'allomancy'.

Re: dictated;

It helps one keep track of them - the moon waxes and wanes, and each phase of this is a month. The moon corresponds with the tides - the levels of the water.

Well, yes, to my knowledge. Unless a rather large dragon has taken up residence.

Yes, that would be the proper Greek breakdown. So do you work magic with metals, or on metals? Or, well, both, I suppose. I think we all dabble in a little of both, but aside from mage-smiths, never enough to give it it's own name.
