Assistant Captain's Log: Day 19:

[ she pauses here. she'd had it all planned out and now that she's here to ask things, she's not so sure she knows what to say. but she's going to try. ]

I was wondering... does anyone know what a holodeck is? And can anyone maybe build one? I don't know how they work. I just know they project holograms. The ones on Voyager made everything seem so real.

[ so she misses flotter and trevis a lot. ]

I, um, also wanted to know if there are any teachers here. I don't know a lot about Earth things. Mom was still teaching me, but I really like science and if anyone can help... I'll really appreciate it.

[ can't have too many teachers, right? ]

Well, there's a place called The Danger Room that uses holograms for training simulations, but I don't think that's what you're thinking of. I could maybe try to create a non-combat program, but I'm not sure how far I can stray outside of the normal programming, or how safe it'd be.

You know, there's a bunch of the kids that've been talking about that. Since there's so many kids in the castle, it'd be nice if we had someone to teach us.

I dunno much about science, but I know quite a lot about Oriental History. I teach it.

[He's pretty sure he can dumb it down from a University level.]

It might work. [ and it's worth trying, right? ] The holodeck on Voyager can show all kinds of things. It's even used for training.

Maybe someone will say something. I hope they do. I miss my studies.

I'll test it first. See if I can turn the safety settings to their highest level. The Danger Room is named the way it is for a reason, but I'll try tinkering with the programming to see if I can make it work.

Maybe I should. I mean...enough kids have expressed an interest in having someone teach us, but no one's actually stepped forward. I'll try asking around, maybe say something in the journal, and see if anyone bites.

If Lieutenant Torres were here, I bet she could help too. Or Seven. [ but she's grateful anyone is willing to try. ] Thank you.

Maybe someone will reply to you instead of me. [ or maybe they'll both get different people volunteering. two are better than one, right? ]

Yeah. China, Japan, Korea. I teach Oriental Studies.

I can make it nonlethal for sure. Done it a bunch of times. But what would you want me to build? That's the part that takes a little longer.

What would you like to know about Earth? Science is a very broad topic...

I know some science - mostly physics - as well as the history and traditions of a fair number of Earth cultures, philosophy, and culinary arts~

[minicaptain]

[ the lengthy pause should tell him that actually means nothing to her. ] Are those places on Earth?

[minicaptain]

Um... I don't know how to explain the holodeck. I always used the holograms for stories. Um... Henry said it sounded like an interactive movie. [ she hopes that makes sense to him. she still doesn't really know what a movie is. ]

[minicaptain]

As much as I can learn. I've never been to Earth but everyone else on Voyager has except me, Neelix, and Seven. [ pause. ] I want to know what my mom's home planet is like.

[minicaptain]

[ considering she was born on a science and exploration vessel in the middle of deep space with a mom who's a xenobiologist and a captain who was a scientist first, she likes science. ] I'll learn anything about science. [ she means that, too.

the others take a few moments to figure out. ] Can you teach those?

Hmm. Like where you play the part of the characters?

That might be doable [and kind of fun]. Do you have a favorite story?

I can field whatever questions you have if you want the point of view from someone who lives there, but for more expansive and techical questions, I would suggest using the library's rescources.

[minicaptain]

I think so.

Flotter and Trevis were my friends. They taught me a lot about forests and water. Flotter was the water being and Trevis was the tree monster. But they were good friends. [ she pauses. ] I don't know how it was supposed to end. They had episodes you could see, one at a time, so I haven't seen the last one yet.

[minicaptain]

Does the library have a computer database? [ otherwise she doesn't think she'll be able to read it, but it's worth trying. ]

I don't know enough to ask anything. What do you like about Earth?

[encryptedlock]

[York makes a thoughtful "hmm" noise.]

So like, educational stuff? I could do something like that. Feel like learning about New York City, the greatest place on Earth?

[kalinda]

It does. [It's kind of funny how many people still enjoy the old books, though.]

I'm sure you do. [A very faint, if nearly inaudible chuckle goes here.] I'd say, compared to other places I've seen, it's simple. Convenient. But that may very well have to do with the time period I'm from.

[minicaptain]

Some of them were educational. Others were recreational, when the crew had time off and weren't working.

[ like tom paris' chaotica one. ]

Okay! [ she'll learn anything, especially about earth. ] I don't know a lot about Earth.

[minicaptain]

Okay. I'll look.

[ compared to her own time, anything's simple and weird. but hey, she's a willing studen. ] What time period are you from?

[kalinda]

The 21st century; the year 2013 AD.

[minicaptain]

...Oh... That's a long time ago. [ it's out before she can stop herself. ]
