16. Gravity/Stay the hell away from me

The town clinic is open and fully operational if you wish to seek treatment here. I have taken over running things for the time being while Dr. Keller is resting.

I am not expecting much of a reply to this, as I know everything that happened must be weighing heavily on all of you, but I would like to at least hear from you when you have a moment.

[Phoebe sounds completely and utterly exhausted in every way possible. But she can't ignore the filter.]

I'm here.

"Here" is something, at least.

It's more than some people can say... [Her voice sounds hollow, missing all the usual cheer and optimism]

[Katniss doesn't even bother with the journal. She heads directly towards the town clinic, nodding at those she trades meat with for supplies. She walks into the clinic, slings her quiver and her bow aside, and all but tackles Simon with another hug.]

Hi. I'm here.

Yeah. [a pause]

How's River?

[The Doctor sounds tired. He hasn't slept at all since he woke up on the Lewis and Clark. He doesn't need much sleep it's true and while he does see a night in the Zero room in his very near future, there's still a bit to go before he will need to.]

Do you need a hand at the clinic?

I know. Is there anything I can do for you?

Only if you feel up to it, Doctor. I had the benefit of sleeping and being away from all the action.

She was asleep the whole time as well, I believe.

[Simon hugs Katniss back once again. He never got tired of it.]

And for that I am still grateful.

Good. [it would've destroyed her, going through that]

[He saw the stasis room before getting to give Brock a hand. He knows people were asleep.]

There's still a lot of work to be done yet and people that need help. I'll be glad to be down presently. Do you need supplies bringing from the castle?

[Chell has precious little to do, stuck in the clinic in the Castle as she is. But she sees that filter.]

I'm alive. Tell your sister hello for me? Please?

[Her writing looks worse than usual. Someone's not figured out yet that writing with a broken shoulder can be done. So, she's attempting to write left-handed.]

[She gave him another tight squeeze, before looking up at him with narrowed grey eyes.] So where is the other meimei? And you are too pale. You need to come out with me.

I will- is this Chell?

If you could, please. [Insert list of things he could use.] But please, do not strain yourself. I don't want to make things worse.

I am glad for that as well.

She is around. I can't imagine seeing everyone in distress has been good for her, though.

[He then smiles.]

I will be out when I have no more patients to take care of- or at least when Dr. Keller is feeling better and can take back over running this clinic. In the meantime, I will take being a little pale.

Seeing everyone in distress hasn't been good for anyone.

[She leans back, wrapping one arm around his waist as she led him to the door.]

Maybe, but you and River need to come to dinner. We can't have all the Doctors out of commission, now can we?

[List! Yes. He folds down the corner of the page for that.] Not a problem at all, I shall bring all that with- What? Ah. [He doesn't get it at first, then the penny drops.] Thank you but not at all. Compared to others... [He lets that hang for a moment; the rest doesn't need to be said.]

I'm sorry that you woke in all that, Simon. Although, being away from the 'action' is not necessarily a bad thing this time. Your sister, is she all right?

I agree, but- now? [He looks concerned, then hastens to add-] Not that I wouldn't enjoy the offer, but I'm a little wary of leaving right now.

I will accept your judgment of your own condition, then- believe me, I sincerely appreciate your offer.

[A pause on Simon's end as well.] Better me having missed things than being out of commission and straining the other medics further. River is fine, but she needed to hide away for a bit, like some others did, I would imagine.

[She takes a slow breath. There isn't anything anyone can do to help her and Peter heal what had happened, unfortunately...]

Just... take care of everyone for me. Yourself included.

Not now. When things have quieted down a little. [She gave him a wry smile.] Don't worry, you can't hurt my feelings. I don't have enough of them to.

That I can do. I promise you that. I was asleep the whole time, so I am much better off than some.

Well, I have a hard time believing that. The part about you not having enough feelings to care, I mean. [He gives her a one-armed squeeze back.] But I will come to visit you when I can. I haven't been out in a while, come to think of it.

You'd be surprised. I am a very simple creature, brother. [She smiled, pleased at that. She gave him another squeeze.] Do you need anything? Soup for the patients, fresh meat or herbs?

Consider yourself lucky. [She takes a breath, trying not to think about everything they'd gone through]

It's going to take a while to heal from this one.

So I have heard. Nobody has come out of this untouched in some manner- and some scars will linger a lot longer than others.

And yet, humans always seem to be more complex than they give themselves credit for. So I will continue to believe in your depths.

[He then considers her question.]

Food is something I had not even considered- but that would be a good idea. The castle is better equipped for long-term patients, I think, so I may not be needing to feed many of them but... well, I need to eat, and so does everyone else who works here.

Well, I have my moments of depth, but don't be fooled.

[She tilted her head at him, quirking a smile.]

All right - I can bring in meat, and make soup. I can also gather greens and berries. All natural.

Sounds good to me- and thank you, very much. I am glad I have someone looking out for me.

[She leaned up and gave him another hug, tight as possible.]

That's what you do for family.

Always. [He held the hug for a long moment before finally letting go.]

All right, Doctor. You get back to work. I'll be back later with food.

That's putting it mildly... [She sighs] I'm sorry. I just... it was bad. One of the worst things I've ever had to go through and given what I've seen and done in my line of work that's saying a lot. It'll take a lot of time to heal from this.

Let me know if there is anything I can do in the meantime. [Not that there will be anything, he's sure, but still.] I'm good at healing physical wounds, but the mental ones are always more difficult.

Thank you, Simon. Unfortunately I think this is something that only time will really heal.
