Forty-seventh Spell

You'll forgive me for inquiring, but I'm curious who all is still here. I've been trying to keep a record but I probably missed a few people. So please answer with your name and if you're willing, I'd also like to hear where you were when you were first discovered by Paradisa residents: Paris, Wonderland, what-have-you.

I'm still here, and my name is Martel Yggdrasill. You may have a record for me already, as I came from Paris.

Yes, you and Alex Russo are the only ones I have down from Paris who are still in the castle.

And I can't truly remember now - it's been quite a few years, but I have been through Paris and Wonderland and a number of others.

Wait, I'm sorry... So you returned during Paris, left again and returned with Wonderland?

Everyone who returned with memories was met with a resident, and their interactions with that resident sparked their memories. Except in a few rare cases.

If you're reading this, you should be among the residents who were in Paradisa before, only to leave and return with those memories of the castle intact.

Oh, no, I meant that I have been through both of those World Shifts.

I... I think this filter is broken, I'm sorry. I only meant to address people who returned with memories.

Back in September, wasn't it? Yes, I have your name down. I think you're the last one left from that group.

Yes, it was then, I think. And I think you are right about that. It seems like everyone I met at that time is gone now.

Very few people who return with their memories seem to stay for very long. It's odd, and makes me wonder if perhaps the magic of restoring memories drains the castle more than simply bringing the person here as a fresh start.

Memories can be tricky things, sometimes. [Will's tone is thoughtful.]

Quite. Memories are a very common price to live in Paradisa as well.

I have noticed that. It seems to me to be a very cruel choice of the castle's.

It's horrid. I have a memory stolen myself, and it's just... a blank. There's nothing at all.

I remember. [Will's words are serious, with a weight of great sadness.]

You feel as if something has been stolen away from you, as if you have lost something. And even if that thing is the most important thing in the world, there is nothing you can do to find it. You do not even know the shape of what you are looking for.

The castle has not taken any memories from me, but in my own world there was a time a year ago when I lost some of memories. It was truly awful.

I am so sorry... I've seen people broken to where they barely recognize their own son. It tears at the heart.

Maybe because the castle sent them away in the first place, they can't feed properly on them when they get brought back? [Martel is just throwing out ideas and theories now.]

That's brilliant! I never thought of it that way before, but it's definitely worth considering!

It could be anything, really, but that's the first thing that comes to my mind.

Only, how would someone test that...

The only thing to do is compare these people who return with memories to someone else who has returned more than once. Compare the longest stay of a person with memories-- which would be you and Alex-- with the longest stay of a person who returned without memories.

That may work, if you can find that out. it might not be easy, now that we've changed journals.

They are easy to forget about if you don't use them, as they're no longer enchanted.

Very true. I haven't seen mine in quite a while after I put it away.

I found a few stray copies in the library. That seems to be where they go when their owners disappear from the castle.

...Huh. Strange they just don't...disappear with the person. But I suppose it's a record of them.

I wonder sometimes if anything truly disappears. The rooms go empty but where do all of the possessions go? We've seen that people sometimes return with their memories, so maybe their things are simply moved.

It's possible. I had my journal with me while I was in Paris, or perhaps it simply appeared once everyone else did.

Either way, I was confused when a book started to talk at me. Until I remembered, of course.

Of course... It does look like any other journal on the outside.

Until you open it. I suppose there's quite a few in the library masquerading as books.

It wouldn't surprise me.
