[Twenty-Three - Right Through The Eye] [Last Night...]

All right, here's your first update, Paradisa. We've stopped overnight on the plains with the ...weird buffalos with the hand-mouths. Everyone's got the tents set up, and I'm currently on second watch.

[She breathed out, looking out to the sky, as she walked around the tents.] We're making .... well, we're at least traveling. I'm concerned about our time frame here, but Tsuna doesn't think it's safe to send anyone ahead - so - yes.

Any advice, well-wishes, all that? Feel free to pass them along.

[He pauses, smirking]

I didn't think you'd be the type to go by what someone like him tells you to do.

If you're thinking of going out on your own anyway, be careful. [he knows you were probably thinking about it]

Good. Don't take any unnecessary risks. We don't know what those bug creatures do to the people they grab.

There are no ranks in that group. Especially not being led by a so-called mafiosa barely out of diapers.

[SOMEONE'S in a mood]

[he might almost give a shit whether or not you come back in one piece.]

[One corner of her mouth lifts up at that tone. No mistaking that.]

Well, then I guess it's a good idea one of us is going.

[A pause.] But I'll try not to die.

(Elfie is new here and as well as being new she's extremely curious about what they're all doing out there. She is a detective after all so it's kind of in her nature to ask questions and be inquisitive. She doesn't know the first thing about this girl but that doesn't stop her answering)

No advice or well wishes, sorry. I'm kind of new here. But maybe you could answer a few questions I have.

Sure ... I guess. What kind of questions?

(Elfie thinks for just a moment, running a hand through her hair before responding to the other girl)

Well, let's start with an easy one, shall we? Why are you guys out there in the first place? I mean, what's your aim?

[She presses her lips together. Why was that the main question?]

To see if these people are able to survive, and to get some information on them and what's going on with those bugs.

(No other reason that to satisfy Elfie's curiosity really.)

I mean, I guess that makes sense or whatever. Just seems like you guys have some sort of savior complex. But don't mind me, I'm new here and I guess I don't know how things work.

[Katniss sighs, before she speaks back into the journal.]

There's not a one of us here, who hasn't lost someone. Who hasn't been through some sort of ... horrific experience. I think we all want to bring some humanity into a world of chaos.

(Alright, okay you've got her there. Her mind immediately jumps to her murdered mother.)

...I guess you're right. But I mean the world's pretty fucked up and there's not much we can do about that, right? I see where you're coming from though. Back home I was a detective of sorts.

No, the world is a fucked up place, and we should do something about that.

[Because honestly, what was the point otherwise? She wouldn't allow Prim's death to mean nothing.]

...Oh, that's good.

[Pause.]

What's a detective?

I suppose it is, yes. I'm tempted to consider myself lucky to be unable to join the circus this time 'round.

I think you should consider yourself very lucky.

Just because we should doesn't mean that it's possible to succeed.

[Elfie would argue her point with anyone so don't take it personally, Katniss. This is just who she is. She raises a brow at the question.]

A detective? It's someone who figures a situation out, investigates things, solves crimes, catches criminals...you know that kind of thing.

And just because there's the possibility to fail, that we shouldn't at least try.

[She countered, because Katniss will argue the opposite. Sometimes, not just to be persnickety.]

Oh ... we ... didn't have anything like that, really.

[Elfie doesn't have anything to say in response to Katniss' counter remark she just nods her head. Because she's not going to admit it out loud but she's right.]

You didn't have Detectives where you're from? What about police?

[She shook her head silently.]

We had the Peacekeepers - but they were more like ... goons with white uniforms, than anything you're talking about.

Peacekeepers, huh? Well, that's a strange name for them. Let me guess, they aren't exactly the most peaceful people in the world.

...The name is something of a misnomer, yes.

Figures.

Well, I'm sure you've got...something to get back to out there. Thanks for answering my questions, whatever your name is.

Katniss. Katniss Everdeen. Feel free to ask more questions, if you have them.

Katniss, right. And I'm Elfie. Elfie Hopkins.

[She tilts her head to the side for a moment.] Yeah? Cool, then...how long have you been here in Paradisa for, Katniss?

Pleasure, Elfie.

[She frowned, before she flipped to the beginning of her journal, and her eyebrows shot up.] Just ... over a year.

That long?

[She's not surprised anymore. She's gotten a similar answer from the other people she's asked the exact same question to.] Do you miss you home?

Time flies, when you're having fun.

[The sarcasm is thick here, but she becomes a little more serious.] Yes, and no. Back home I'm being led off to my execution. [That she knows of.]

[Elfie snorts a little at that] Yeah, I've had a barrel of laughs ever since I got here.

...

...Oh. Well, that...sucks. [Yeah, Elfie doesn't know what else to say other than that.]

[She sighed, quietly. It's not much of a life, I'll grant you that. But it's better than some.

[She smiled, almost wearily.] Don't worry about it. It was worth it.
