[Bucky's not in the ballroom with everybody else, or whoever decided to go to the ballroom. He's actually sitting in the lobby, with a bunch of candles around him. There's a book of matches next to him, too, since there seems to be a magical draft in here. Thanks, Castle. There also seems to be a wished-up bottle of the worst tasting whiskey in the world and a shot glass.]

Hey, are all of you guys all right? You aren't stuck anywhere, are you? If you want some company [or to keep him company] I'm in the lobby. Can't miss me. There's a ton of candles.

(OOC: You probably know if you're Bucky's friend or not. This is also open to anybody who wants to walk by and see him there.)

[Dairine can definitely read that. So in a bit, she wanders into the lobby, a small spark of light floating next to her.]

[He sees her approaching, and raises his shot glass to her in a salute, and then takes it in one swallow.]

[ The journey down to the lobby seemed perilous, but she has finally made it. Lucrezia edged toward Bucky clutching an old expensive-looking manuscript and a snuffed out candle on the other hand. ]

Dear Bucky! This must be how sailors feel when they see land.

[blue_sniper]

[He grins at her and shifts over so she can sit down. Then he strikes a match and relights her candle.] Too bad I'm not a sailor. I'm in the army. ...What's the book?

[heloise]

[ She returns the grin with a chuckle as she hops into the circle and seats herself beside him. ]

No, you are the land. [ She places the manuscript on her lap. The title is in Latin. ] This is a small comfort, a gift from home. Have you heard--of Abelard and Heloise, Bucky?

[blue_sniper]

Oh, it was your gift from the Castle. And no, can't say I have. [He smiles.] A poor boy from Brooklyn wouldn't know any stories like that. Or the language it's written in.

[heloise]

[ She seems genuinely surprised to hear that he is poor, since he is a soldier. But then she smiles bashfully and runs gentle fingers down its cover. ]

My brother read it for me.

Abelard was--castrated for loving her and so became a monk. Heloise, a great beauty at the time, became a nun because she could never love another man. Their love was pure and all-consuming, like the love of God.

...That is a terrible story. They love each other and they get separated like that? Why did he become a monk? That was pretty senseless. If she was really that in love with him, she wouldn't have cared if he had been castrated.

[Dairine blinks at all the candles. Woah, he wasn't kidding.]

What on Earth are you doing? An Opera Phantom impression?

A what? No, I'm keeping things illuminated. [There's more than that, of course, but he's not going to tell her that unless she asks.]

[ Lucrezia giggles with some amusement. Good thing she has learned enough about women in his time from the other Americans. ]

Abelard cannot marry her now that he is impotent. And as a Christian woman of her time, Heloise must marry or enter a convent, so she chose the latter for his sake. They wrote these letters.

[blue_sniper]

... [He stares at her. Then decides that this requires a drink and takes a shot of whiskey.] Your century sounds like a horrible, horrible place to live.

[heloise]

[ She laughs and agrees inwardly, keeping her eyes on him and his drink curiously. ]

What is that? May I try?

[blue_sniper]

It's whiskey. Type of alcohol. The stuff the Castle gives you is awful. But if you want to try... [He wishes up another shotglass and pours her a shot.]

Nevermind. [Broadway musicals are probably not high on Bucky's to-do list.]

And the drinking?

Sometimes I drink. People do drink, you know. Even if it is this nasty stuff the Castle gave me.

[heloise]

Whiskey. [ She picks up the glass and admires the way the liquid glows from the candlelight before she takes a sip and winces from the burn. ] Like drinking fire.

I am not going to set anything on fire. Though, if I set anything on fire it'll possibly be myself.

It does burn going down. But I wouldn't drink too much of it, Lucrezia. I'm used to it, and you're not. The last thing I need is you drunk.

Bucky. [Now he's actually concerned this could happen.] Do you need me to come down there?

[ She sets down her glass obediently and smiles at him. ]

Are you afraid, Bucky?

I am not going to set myself on fire. [When has denials like these ever worked in his favor? Never. He resigns himself to having Steve in the lobby in about ten minutes.]

Afraid? [You're going to have to be more specific for him.]

[Dairine frowns, then walks over.]

If it's nasty, then don't drink it. Or be more specific with your wishes.
