[Castiel really isn't used to having this much free time.

In his world, he spent most of his existence following orders. After that, his life had consisted almost entirely of running or fighting--or both--but since arriving in the Castle there's pretty much only been peace. That had been incredibly helpful as he tried to adjust to being human, giving him the time and opportunity needed to come to terms with things, but now that he's back to his usual self he doesn't know what to do with all this free time.

His spell had failed before, depositing him into the pool two weeks earlier, and so he's spent awhile trying to research other methods in the library and finding frustratingly nothing about this place. So, after exhausting his patience for the subject for the moment, he's focusing on learning about a different subject.]

For those of you who are human, what is it you enjoy most about being so?

[He's gotten the basics down, but other than trying different kinds of food he isn't yet really exploring any of the fun things about being human. Other than the freedom to make his own choices, he really doesn't quite know what the perks of being human truly are, and he's curious. He knows this will probably out him as not human, but he's confident enough that isn't as much of an issue in this place as he'd initially worried.]

Don't know, really. I suppose everything seemed much simpler when I was human.

You are not anymore?

[Castiel's experience is the opposite; things were simpler as an angel, and being human is confusing.]

I don't know really. I believed myself to be human, once. But perhaps I never was. Not truly.

What are you, then?

[It's an insensitive question, but this is Castiel.]

I am an Old One of the Light.

[That's not really a thing in his world, and while he has ideas of what that could describe he's going to ask instead.]

What does that mean?

It is rather difficult to explain in words like this. Because it seems like my kind exist only in my own world.

But perhaps the easiest way to explain is to say that in my world there are many forms of magic. There is the Old Magic of the Earth and the Wild Magic of living things, which does not love humans. And there is the High Magic, which governs the working of the universe and sits in judgement above all other forms of magic. And directly beneath the High Magic there are two forces. Poles, you might call them. Which we call the Dark and the Light.

The Dark is a great dark pit as deep as the universe. All that is cruel, all that is angry, all that is jealousy and hatred and madness. All of that is the Dark. Since the beginning of time they have sought to create a world in which there is nothing else in the mind of man. And that there should never be any question of goodness or mercy or humanitarianism or anything of the things that allow men to live in peace, for they would create a world where there is no longer any choice in the minds of men.

Since the beginning of time, we have been fighting against them. We of the Light exist only to oppose the Dark and to create a world where men may make their own choices, free of any influence but their own minds and judgment. Where the Dark is a great dark pit, we are the cold flame that burns at the center of the universe.

I don't know. I imagine those things are mostly the same as what most people enjoy about being alive, but maybe there's some perspective I'm missing out on.

[That's... Definitely complicated. It isn't totally clear to Castiel still, but he gets the general idea well enough he thinks. It's interesting; definitely difference than how things are set up in his world.]

That is fascinating. You were not aware you were one of these beings until recently?

What are those things? What is it about being alive that you, or most people, enjoy?

Sex, drugs, and rock and roll. But mostly sex and drugs. Well, I guess booze more than drugs, it's easier to come by.

The most important thing in my life is my son, so that's what I enjoy most about being human -- being his mom. [Since she had given him up for adoption when he was born, it had taken him ten years to find her again, but once he was back in her life, she was really glad that he was there.]

The art of conversation.

[ She could say talking or singing but that would be too obvious, even if she does mean to be cruel. ]

Good liqour.

[She really only has to think for a moment]

Family and friends. Spending time with them, sharing big moments in their lives, or remembering things with them later.

It is the way of the Old Ones. We are born as children to human families, and we live as humans and among humans. Until the day of our awakening, when we become aware of ourselves and of our duties.

I stopped being a child on my eleventh birthday.

I don't know. The food's good. Some kids are cool. Art I guess. You can't appreciate that shit if you're a dog or something.

Sex.

Is it a sudden change? Or are you always unusual?

Experiences, then? And bonds with other people, and sharing experiences with them?

[That's something he can understand.]

That is something many species enjoy, I have found.

What are those?

[He's not sure if they're what they sound like or this is some term he doesn't know of ~~and it's kind of both~~.]

What do you find so enjoyable about that?

[Castiel's never been big on talk even when he was capable of it.]
