SEVENTEENTH SHOT

[It’s no coincidence that Tess has been quiet for a new weeks, what with what’s happened in her household, but well, she’s never been one to hide. She might drop off the radar, or change her identity, but she’d never hide.

Only cowards hide.

Despite the weather turning warmer, Tess is in a thick sweater with the collar drawn around her tightly, sitting on the front steps of the castle. Those first few weeks of spring are nice after a cold winter, and she’s looking forward to a summer –– hopefully one more easygoing than the spring they’ve had, or the winter before it.

Tess balances her journal on her knees and flips through it idly. After a moment she gives a huff of exasperation.]

Missing rooms, super strength, magic, weddings…

Just once I’d like to open the journal and talk about old episodes of some TV show or something normal. There are so many TV shows I wish I’d gotten to see the ending to. I never got to see that Carrie movie, or see if Miley Cyrus ended up in rehab.

Such a piss-off.

[Tess gives a snort.]

Maybe less fondly and more out of morbid curiosity.

Do you need something to watch it on, too?

[Pitch is going to be super accommodating here-- he's all for getting horror movies into the hands of the Castle residents.]

I own a TV, so I'm covered there.

Are you the castle's equivalent of Netflix, running around delivering movies?

Let's just say I'm a fan of sharing horror movies.

Really? I was never a big fan, but I liked the actress in her other stuff. Whether it's as good as I remember it being is another matter entirely, though.

Do you remember it being scary?

The other stuff she was in? No, not really. It was some low-rent superhero comedy.

I meant Carrie. I don't even know what actress you're talking about.

I've never seen it. It never ended up getting released.

But you know the story, right? Does it sound like something that would scare you?

Yeah, I think so. Loser goes to prom, flips out and kills everyone. It could be scary, depending on how they did it.

Glad to hear it.

Where do you want the DVD delivered?

[dictated]

[dog_eat_dog]

I'm on the front steps.

[dictated]

[fearbringer]

I'll be there... now.

[And true to his word, he's there immediately; he steps out of a shadow in the entrance hall and walks out onto the steps. Of course, Tess will just see the door opening on its own, and a floating DVD coming towards her.]

[Tess turns sharply when she sees the DVD case out of the corner of her eye, and she sits a little straighter, a little stiffer –– what the fresh hell is this? She doesn't dare take her eyes off it, though.]

What the hell is this?

[dictated]

[fearbringer]

[He stops, frowning. He doesn't think he's spoken to her before, and she could very well be a nonbeliever-- especially since she's an adult.]

Can you see me?

[He knows if she can't, she won't be able to hear him either, but he also thinks she could just be reacting to his general appearance, or to how quickly he arrived.]

[dictated]

[She can't see him, no, nor hear him in front of her –– just in the journal. She glances back at it, warily.]

No. Where are you?

[dictated]

[fearbringer]

Right in front of you, holding the movie. You can't see me, which means you don't believe in me... which means I'll have to convince you of my existence.

I'm the Boogeyman.

[Kate can't help but actually feel bad reading all of that. Although she doesn't particularly like Tess, the woman is obviously troubled and comes from the type of background Kate can try to sympathize with, but doesn't really understand.

I can definitely spoil Carrie for you, if you want. [She can't help but smirk to herself.] But from my timeline, Miley Cyrus is still up in the air.

[Her eyes narrow, just slightly. Skeptical:]

The Boogeyman. Right.

The long and prolonged kind. Death by public humiliation, maybe.
