I do not think it is terrible, but it implies that a woman needs protection. If she likes that, fine. But I have worked for many years to be capable of defending myself against anything that may come my way. It is an insult to my hard work for a man to think he needs to "protect" me.
I do not mind other tenets of chivalry, I suppose. Opening doors and such. But that is really just basic politeness.
