[Yuan is in the library, reading- no, actually it looks like he's writing something. That's unusual. He has both his old and new journals with him, and periodically flips through the old one, which is currently open to somewhere fairly near the beginning. He seems very intently focused, which clearly means you should bother him.

At some point, he thinks to open up the new one to a blank page, and scribbles a quick filter into it.]

I'm writing down a...memoir of sorts, of my time in the castle. If I should ever leave unexpectedly - which, let's face it, is the norm here - I'd like it if someone could make sure it makes its way into the library as a resource for future generations.

That's part of what gave me the idea - I'd like to know that at least something I've accomplished will remain for others to learn from, even when no one is left to remember.

It's especially important with the change to the new journals. I suppose that would also explain why the words of the previous residents did not remain for us to learn from, as well.

It's not much of a secret. I'm...compiling a memoir of sorts. All my journal entries, plus notes about what was going on between them, and...things I didn't write down at the time, or didn't know about until later. I'm hoping it can be a resource and a record for future generations of residents.

That's a rather good idea! I'm sure it would be very helpful to people- mine aren't exactly...readable.

Readable or not, having more than one perspective would surely be useful as well. [He looks Allen in the eye briefly with an encouraging smile before going back to writing.] I'm sure there's plenty I've missed, this isn't meant to be a comprehensive history...and especially since you've been here longer than I have.

Even without losses to encourage it, yes. There aren't many others besides you and I who remember Vergil, I'm sure, not to mention some of the others.

I suppose...[Just the matter of translating...] Mine was mostly made throughout the years in order to try to figure out this castle.

Even with my time, I don't think a comprehensive history would even be possible of this place.

No, I imagine it probably isn't. There's too much we don't know, too much going on at any one time...although most of it isn't relevant in the long-term. The best we can hope for is the last five years or so, I think.

I don't doubt it. Say whatever you will about the castle, it does have a way of drawing disparate people together. It would be a shame if our experiences weren't remembered.

Well- if you think about it really, we don't know what could turn out to be relevant or not so it's best to record everything we can! I mean...it's like it could always turn out the answer is a sled!

...A sled? ...But I do see what you mean. It can be easy to brush over something insignificant and never realize the true meaning of it.

A number of things. Wanting to leave a lasting mark on a world determined to make us all impermanent. Remembering how many people I've known that have since been forgotten. It's always the case that most of the residents in the castle have been here less than a year...

Hm. That is true. It's always hard to know what Paradisa will allow to linger. From what Raine told me, even more has changed over the years that I realized.

It has. There was a time - quite a long time - when we had no access to anything beyond the forest.

I was told the Dead Zone shifted...?

Twice, really. The first time, it simply opened up. There was territory that we had simply never been able to reach before, but the price for entering it was losing our abilities. I'd been here...perhaps a year, maybe a little more, at that time.

The second time was when Raine found a switch out in what was at the time the Dead Zone. It expanded the powered region immensely, to its current boundary.

I'd heard about that second time, but not the first. Which certainly reinforces the needs for these memoirs of yours. Especially since the journals were changed.

Exactly.

Before the Dead Zone, there was...a boundary around the castle and the town. Everything was surrounded by forest, and if we tried to go too far into that forest, one of two things would happen. Either the explorer would get turned around and wind up coming out of the forest back at the castle, or they would simply fall unconscious and wake up in their bed. This was before any organized expeditions had been sent, and by the time I arrived, the boundary was for the most part taken for granted by those who had been here longer.

What people believed varied, but no one was able to get far enough to learn the truth. It was...cramped, to say the least. And the weather never changed, except for snow at Christmas.
