1st Event Horizon

I'm ready.
[Sam leaned across the console to call back the others. In a few more moments she'd find out if this had actually worked. If so they would all, save Teal'C, reclaim the last fifty years; if not, well no one would be around to blame her.]

Do it, Sam.
[Cam Mitchell gave her the nod, and she signaled to the Jaffa the it was time. Teal'C enclosed himself in the stasis field, and Carter pushed the switch across the Asgard console, engaging the device. Light flashed and the ship hurled itself back in time, Teal'C stepped up to change the course of the Odyssey before the Ori blast could endanger them once again, avoiding the same happening, except Samantha Carter was nowhere to be seen.]

Did it work?
[Sam looked around her, this was not the bridge of the Odyssey. She wasn't anywhere she recognized. It sort of looked like something on the worlds they had been to where the Ancients had left great old edifices. However, that was more Daniel's area than hers; she didn't identify things; she made them work. Sam Carter was the engineering brain of the unit, and at that moment she was without the unit. She was cut off and separated from the rest of SG-1, and she didn't even have a weapon on her.]

Ok, time to get a look around.
[She wasted no time in surveying her surroundings...what was this? She was laying on a bed, and on a table beside the bed was a small journal, which seemed to be writing out her words and actions automatically].

Ok, I've been...booked. Now how about the whole releasing me to the wild thing.

[Normally, General O'Neill or Cam made the jokes; but in a pinch she had a few zingers, given her situation, she would call this a pinch. She was alone and would have to assume she was likely going to be tracked and monitored, best not to mess with things just yet, until she understood her situation. Sam shuddered with sudden flashbacks to late-night movies where people were hunted for sport. She shook her head. Pull it together Carter. You're a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force for god's sake. She shook off the willies and picked up the book she'd been looking at before getting distracted. It was a small hardbound journal nothing too out of the ordinary about it.

This was it; she really couldn't stay in this room for any longer. The others were probably around and finding them was her first priority; everything else could wait. Sam pressed the open com button on her radio to send out the call. The others would respond; they could regroup and then figure out just what the hell she'd done wrong.]

This is Lieutenant Colonel Samantha Carter with the United States Air Force, other personal military please respond.

[Well here was hoping. While she waited, Sam walked out of the room and started down the hall of what seemed to be an enormous and very solid structure.

Just where the hell was she?]

[He hadn't even noticed her go home, and now Sam was back? Have a very confused voice on your radio.]

Sam? Is that you?

[Carson hadn't even noticed he had his headset on, never mind expecting to hear a voice through it.

And one that had recently been absent from the castle for some time...]

Colonel Carter?

[Hesitant at first, before continuing, clearing his throat.]

Colonel Carter, this is Dr. Carson Beckett. Are you okay?

Dr. Harold Emmerich. Can you tell me where you are?

I'm in room 606.

[And a pause here. She sounded a little lost. Mentioning Dr. Jackson, Colonel Mitchell and the others...]

Colonel, what's the last thing you remember?

Okay, so you're near the lobby, probably on the second floor. I'm headed down to meet you. It's probably better if I...uhh...explain what's happened in person. It can be a lot to take in.

[He'll start heading down now, meanwhile he's got his journal in his lap, a headset on to continue radio contact, and a Metal Gear Mark II following close behind him.]

[Yeah, Carson is glossing over that technical explanation, but his suspicions are mostly confirmed]

Oh dear. Okay, I can prove you're not dead, but explaining where you are might take a wee while. I think it might be easier if I come to you. Can you describe where you are?

Okay, well, just hang about in the lobby, I'll be down in a bit.

[And Carson's just going to be grabbing his stuff to be heading down to the lobby. His Life-Signs Detector, Medical Scanner attachment and a first aid kit.]

[A little while later, Sam will hear the whirr of wheels on the floor, coming from what sounds like two sources. The source is obviously Huey and his little robot buddy. When he spots Sam, he waves before approaching.]

Huh, I'll be damned, it really is you, isn't it? Guess what they say about people leaving and coming back sometimes is true.

Uhh..anyway, I'm Dr. Emmerich, but you can just call me Huey. You're in a place called Paradisa. It's...sort of a pocket dimension, of sorts, where people from all times and places are sent for...well...we don't really know why we're here. Anyway, something's taken from us, like a memory or a skill, and in return we can ask the castle for most anything we want. The bad part is that we can't leave willingly. The castle just sorta..."sends" us home when it's done with us. The last time you were here, you theorized that the castle isn't "magical" at all, but was instead governed by some sort of advanced form of technology.

[His ramble done, he gestures to his little robot buddy, who's looking at Sam curiously.]

This is Metal Gear Mark II. It's one of the things I've invented since coming here.

[And Carson bustles on down to the lobby after about five minutes. It's only when he spots Sam that he pauses. That little meeting in the Lux a few months ago seems so far away. Especially when this one can't remember anything...

Still, deal with the present, not the past. Carson walks up to Sam, smiling lightly.]

It's good to see you again, Colonel.

Yup, just a couple of months ago, in fact. You were one of the people to welcome me to Paradisa.

[And he chuckles.]

Heh. You said that last time, too. I'm still working on researching this place myself, but Paradisa...has some sort of intelligence all it's own, that keeps people from digging too deep.

[He smiles even bigger, the Mark II being his pride and joy.]

Well, the balance was easy enough to figure out. It's built from lightweight composite plastics lined with kevlar, and the metal parts are all built from titanium alloy. My specialty at MIT was ambulatory programs, specifically bipedal locomotion, so it just came down to examining how human balance works, both in standing still and walking, and making it work on a smaller scale. Mark II? Show Sam your trick, please.

[The little robot look up at Huey and nods it's little camera pod head, before spinning around in a circle, seeming to lose it's balance and hop on one leg, it's video screen sticking out and waving to balance it. Once it regains it's balance, a snakelike manipulator arm extends from the side, and puts it's "hand" to it's "brow" in a salute.]

For a power source, I gave it self-renewing NiCAD batteries, that regain their charge from the Mark II's own movement. It's still got a pretty limited range, but it's engineered to use as little power as possible

Aye, I'd say about 6 months, give or take.

[He takes her hand and shakes it. The formality being a bit weird, but he goes with it. Explanations would come later.]

Okay. First things first, how are you feeling? Any injuries?

Re: Action

[personal profile] zeke_developer 2012-07-03 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. I actually added the screen specifically to act as a counter-balance. Originally, I was just gonna have a speaker on the side, so I could communicate through it via radio, but obviously it needed something on it's upper body to help it keep it's balance when it's moving around on uneven terrain, so I added the screen on a powered hinge so it could use that to steady itself. You should see the program I had to write so it'd know how to do that.

[He nods.]

Oh sure, that'd be no problem. There're only one or two others here with the same sort of interest in this kinda stuff, and they're both...well...they both pretty hard to work with at times. I've actually got a couple of projects I want you to have a look at, once you've settled in and everything. I've got a couple of really big projects I want you involved in.

[The radio clicked on but he didn't speak for a long moment. She'd been *gone*. Just...gone. Like she'd never been there. Hell, he'd started to think he'd imagined it. A fevered dream inside of another fevered dream, really. But she'd been there, and it had been...them. And it had been magnificent.]

[Now it was like it never had happened.]

Hey.

[He cleared his throat]

It's General O'Neill.
