So, uh. You know, weird as that was, I kinda liked having you two as sisters. I hope I wasn't too annoying for an older brother.

I gotta say I liked that--and that we should do fireworks here more often. Did any of you ever get to do anything like that in your real life? Cause I sure didn't.

Well, I never had a nephew before, so I guess that makes us even. I just hope you weren't too bored, hanging around with a bunch of adults.

You weren't boring, and I had lots and lots of cousins.

Good, good. You guys didn't get into too much trouble when I wasn't paying attention did you? I know how kids are.

Aww, I don't get into that much trouble. I was good!

If by 'fireworks' you mean 'frag grenades' then yes, I did a lot of that at home, but we could stand more of the safer kind here.

I don't really have anything to compare you with, but thank you. I am glad the castle gave me a chance to see what it was like. I am honored to call you brother. [Present tense there is intentional.]

Hopefully I wasn't too annoying as a sister.

You could never be annoying to me, Kat. Although it was kinda funny to see you so short.

[She's making him a bit teary-eyed with that present tense there.]

And you know? Even if we don't have the same kind shared past regular siblings do, I do care about you a lot. I don't think there's anyone else I would have picked over you to be my sister.

Okay, good. Not that you're much of a troublemaker anyway.

[There's a pause from her. The world change, while it was fun, wasn't exactly the best example of what they would be like if they actually got married.

But, on the point,] We still have a lot of problems to resolve, York.

I know. I just--I'd like to actually resolve them. And even with all the fighting, I know I'm happier with you than I am by myself.

[After all, he knows their time together is, ultimately, limited. She'll go home or he'll go home and then they'll both be dead. Why waste their time here not making the most out of things?]

I don't remember my family enough for comparison. But I enjoyed having you as a brother...

The castle gave me a nice chance there. A chance at a normal life.

You know, as much as normal is overrated, it was pretty nice. I like that it gave me you as a sister, too.

I don't think normal families are quite that big or dramatic, though.

It is. Just makes me understand better what I've been protecting...

I'm sure you did. Not every day you get Spartans in your family.

Yeah. I mean, that's why I enlisted. [So that other people, the ones with families and laughter and retreats, could keep on being normal.]

Uh-huh. Even if you two were a bit shorter than usual.

[He's quiet for a long moment, remembering what Kat had told him about the Spartan program.] I know we all would have been even more screwed without you guys in the war, but that doesn't make it fair, especially not to you.

We'll never know now, will we?

[Well, Carolina's not taking that as a promise, but it's still some kind of small progress.]

Come on over, then. I'm doing things around my quarters. [Like re-arranging, finally removing Maine's room, things like that.]

[And since he hadn't yet gone back to the Danger Room, there's a knock within a minute.]

[Carolina answers the door in a pair of grey sweatpants and black beater. Today, she'd decided, was her day off to de-stress and, well, her idea of de-stressing is still working, but on less important things. The couch is at a diagonal where she'd left it to answer the door, but otherwise the room is in a bit of a not-so-neat upheaval.]

Hey, come on in.

[York fully approves, judging by the way his helmet sweeps up and down her figure approvingly. Okay, it's not exactly form-fitting, but he still likes to see her out of armor.]

Don't really have any relatives, so no.

Unless you're talking about the fireworks. I do plenty of those.

Well, I was thinking the reunion thing. If I ever had aunts and uncles and a billion cousins, I never knew them either.

But far as the fireworks? Yeah, I bet you could design some awesome ones. There must be some holiday coming up soon we could use as an excuse, right?

Afraid we're pretty much tapped out on holidays. At least until Halloween. Buuuut I'm pretty sure people don't do Halloween fireworks.

I wonder ... since I was like that during our piracy stint as well ... I wonder if that's what I would have looked like if I hadn't gone hrough the augmentation process.

[Here she goes quiet for a moment. She still wasn't that great at dealing with raw emotions like this, but it was appreciated.] I -- care about you, too. You're my oldest family in this place, and I can always count on you.

Huh. Might be the case. You probably had some serious steroid use, huh?

And I'll be here for you as much and as often as I can, Kat. Whether that means facing down weird enemies or canoeing.
