[He's only poking her because he's worried and things. Yes. Besides he missed dinner with her for her birthday, he has to make it up somehow, right?]

Depends on what you want to talk about.

It would depend entirely upon what you would like to discuss. I only wish to lend you an ear is all.

Both sound lovely, and I've some things I'd like to discuss with you as well.

[Ahh Helen, always working. You may need to talk to her about that.]

Meet me in the lobby and we can talk into the city, and discuss such things as we go?

[Helen pulled on a shawl and wrapped up as she walked, she made it to the lobby with her journal tucked under one arm. She'd been sketching and planning long into the night.]

[He pulled on a hat, an old cap on his head along with a walking stick as he came down. Normally he wouldn't have the latter but well, the time of year and such was bothering him. And when he got to the lobby he gave her a smile, offering her his free arm.]

Shall we? And we can discuss what business you have in mind.

[Helen paused a moment when she saw him, flashing back to Normandy with his present attire. She hadn't thought about that in a long time. Things had been...substantially different then.]

Well, you look very dashing.

[Her arm slipped into his and she fell into easy step with him, not yet bringing up work matters.]

[Very different, and he could tell her more on that if she liked. But that wasn't for the now, was it? For now he was going to take her to dinner and figure out where things were going yup.]

And you haven't changed at all, still as charming as you were all those years ago.

[One day they would have to discuss it, but not today. She assumed the call was just to discuss their mutual plans for the Sanctuary. She'd forgotten her birthday entirely.]

Normally I don't succumb to flattery, but in your case James, I'll make an exception.

[And that deserved a kiss, just because.]

[Yes some day, when he's not going to worry about her saying something to start an argument. Or something. But yes her birthday, it's important okay?

And he's just going to raise an eyebrow at that.]

Helen, if I give flattery I mean it. Besides, how can I not when I managed to somehow forget your birthday?

[Her look of surprise as the reminder of her birthday was comical]

Good lord, has it come already? I've been so immersed in things I haven't really even noticed.

[Which got a laugh from him.]

It's October, Helen. You've missed it by a couple months.

[Heavens, not only had she missed August, but September and no into October. Helen rubbed a palm over her face.]

I suppose I've been preoccupied. I...James I'm sorry if I've been out of sorts for so long.

[Yup, and he shook his head at that, squeezing her arm gently.]

It happens to us all. Would you like to talk about it?

I suppose it's been everything, those impressions of Ashely, the plans for the new Sanctuary, the way people just come and go here almost as if they've never been here at all.

You get used to it, though I have found having a routine of sorts helps. A job or even something to take care of, things like that.

Which is why I've been throwing myself into the designs for a new Sanctuary. Though maybe I've been overdoing it a touch. I feel like I haven't left my room in weeks.

Then perhaps, Helen, we should take up doing other things. [Yes we.] At least to get us both out and about, which would do us well.

I would like that.

[And then that subtle we caught her attention. She brought them to a stop and looked at him with surprise arcing her brows high.]

James, I know we haven't discussed things, well that's not true. We've discussed a great many things, but not this. I have always enjoyed your company, your companionship. We've spent years, decades supporting each other.

I'm not doing this very well.

[He was going to offer her an hour for tea. Maybe take a stroll around the castle once a day, go out and see Brian the Terror Bird. That sort of thing. Not...well...not this. This? This is awkward.

And he frowns as he tries to figure this out.]

I have as well, and...[How do shot feelings?] I was, offering perhaps tea together once a day, or something. [Nope still not sure how to do this.] What exactly are you, saying, Helen?

[Because no idea how do you do this.]

[His expression, the discomfort. She'd put him in the awkward position of trying to not hurt her because he didn't feel the same. Perhaps he didn't feel anything at all. Now Helen felt like a fool.]

Of course, tea would be wonderful.

I'm sorry, my thoughts have been muddled lately. Please, don't let anything I've said make you uneasy.

[No she'd put him in the awkward position of expressing his feelings. Which was hard enough on a good day let alone, well this.

So instead of dropping this like a Nice Person would he thought he would be the Well Meaning Friend and actually pursue this line of discussion. With a sigh he turned and faced her better, tilting his head.]

No, Helen, I'm sorry. I didn't mean too, I thought with what you were saying...it sounded as if you were propositioning me. Or asking me out, as the young people see these days. [Sounds so weird coming from him but yes, he asked that. And yes he's still awkward but trying not to be for her sake.]

[Oh dear, how was she going to save face? How could she get out of this without insulting James gentlemanly nature? She had always been the one among them who had adapted to the modern times, she was obviously acting out of a sense of liberated impropriety. ]

I'm sorry James, I didn't mean it to sound crude. I have nothing but the highest respect for you, I always have. If my manner has been offensive or forward I apologize and hope it won't damper the years of friendship we have between us.

[Well, there would be less face to save if they could get over the awkward and admit it. He wasn't insulted, just caught by surprise at this and he was trying to overcome it. So forgive him for being well, worried about this.]

Helen, it's understandable and it won't. I...[How do you say "I have feelings for you but I'm not sure you're acting out of your right mind for this?" :|] It is hardly offensive Helen, just unexpected after things recently. [...] Are you certain, darling?

[Yes darling. His sign of affection for her when there was more then just friendship between him. He has feelings for you, Helen, can you see it now? ;;]

[Were they dancing around the same subject? He looked as confused as she felt, but...]

James, [She looked up to him, the one man who had always been there for her, who had supported her through everything, who had been her touchstone. How could she have been so blind for so long, she had a second chance for something?

Her hands raised to cup his cheeks, gentle stroking of her thumbs over his cheekbones before she brought him down with a gentle pull.]

I have been sure of this since 1944.

[Her lips found his with a soft, warm contact. It was gentle and unrushed but it lacked nothing in the way of emotion.]
