rose: have a terrible day

[Spending fourteen dreadful days in the body of a cat is never fun, but Rose had underestimated precisely how dreadful it could be. She woke up this morning with a horrendous headache, the feeling of fur in places she never wanted it, and the itching urge to wash her face constantly. She couldn't get out of the stupid castle quickly enough.]

Admittedly, being a cat wasn't as agreeable as I had imagined it. It was, in fact, a bit infuriating. I wouldn't recommend the experience, unless you're already accustomed to walking on all fours.

[Bundled up in a jacket and scarf, she's gone outside with a mug of hot chocolate and a small paperback tucked into her pocket. The fresh air and the feeling of being 5'1'' again are enjoyable, but one thing is still bothering her.]

… Did Kanaya Maryam leave again? I noticed her nameplate had vanished.

There were high points, but I'm afraid that climbing furniture and conversing with my own dull cats lost its luster after a few short hours.

[By the time Mavis spots Rose, she's finished dictated to the journal, which means there's nothing stopping her from rushing up to her friend. She definitely noticed Rose was gone, although it wasn't at the forefront of her mind after the kiss that she is decidedly not thinking about anymore.

Still, it's a relief to see that Rose is still there... The possibility of her being truly gone hadn't hit Mavis until she saw her, thankfully. It makes her all the more eager to say hello.]

Hey! You're here, that's great! I was wondering what happened to you. Have you been lying low? [A little laugh.] You didn't get into any trouble, did you?

[Rose turns around immediately at the voice, and smiles. She doesn't have a free hand to wave, so she just gives Mavis a nod of acknowledgement.]

That depends on one's definition of trouble. I just spent a lovely two weeks as a kitten.

[The inflection she puts on "lovely" is clear indication that her experience was anything but.]

So I guess you could say I was lying low. Quite a bit lower to the ground, in fact.

A kitten? [Mavis can't help it... She giggles at that image, especially with what Rose says after sharing the information. But it's quick, and then her expression turns thoughtful.]

I'm sorry to hear about that. Being a kitten... How strange. [No thumbs!] Were you thinking like a kitt-- Oooh! Hey! Did you see in color, or black and white?

[That gets an actual almost-laugh.]

Cats are not entirely colorblind, though the spectrum of color visible to them is a bit limited. So I suppose that yes, I did see color. And no, I was not thinking like a kitten.

[She shakes her head slightly.]

At least, I was myself enough to realize that conversing with actual cats is almost unbearably dull.

I didn't know that! Wow, that's pretty interesting... And I'm glad you weren't thinking like a kitten. That would be weird, I think.

[At the statement about talking to real cats, she shrugs.] Is it? That's too bad. I've never tried talking to any of the cats at the hotel... Not that I'd be able to understand them, but still. Our old head chef could understand his rat, though.

[Which is barely relevant, but she kind of wants to feel like she has something interesting to say, too!]

It would be very weird, indeed. My best friend took it upon himself to care for me, and I would have been mortified to find myself licking his face.

[Is is interesting! Rose quirks an eyebrow at the second part.]

If you could understand them, I'm sure you would hear a lot of comments about food, and several more about the urge to use one's claws. As for the rat, I'm not quite sure if that's disconcerting, or strangely endearing.

[Aaand that gets another giggle.] Oh, yeah, that'd be all kinds of awkward! But I'm really glad he looked after you. That's a good friend. [And now she feels guilty for not even asking about where Rose was. Oops.]

Yeah? That does sound dull. Too bad; I've always liked cats.

[She shrugs once again.] The rat was kind of nasty, really, but so was the chef. I don't think they were ever trying to be, though... They just wanted to do good jobs.

He certainly is.

[She would have been one of the few people expressing concern. Even John chalked it up at first to her just "being Rose".]

I have as well. I suppose I'm what one might call a "cat person", in the most basic terms. Though dull conversation doesn't detract from their likeability as a species.

[ You know what's super awkward? Watching after your best friend for half a month without even realizing it's her the entire time. He feels kind of dumb for it still. ]

I was a cat for quite a while at one point. And I was infectious.

I'm glad you have him, then!

That's definitely true. Especially since most people can't talk to them at all, anyway. Although I guess I'm more of a bat person!

I have, actually. As a child I had a beloved kitten. He died under mysterious circumstances, however.

Oh, wow, I'm really sorry to hear about that... [She offers a sympathetic look and places her hand on Rose's shoulder.] I'm sure you took really good care of him, though.

I've never had a pet, but I'd probably have a cat if I did. Or... Maybe a rat. I think anything else would be too close to monsters I know. [A beat.] Or stuff I've eaten.

Thank you. I would like to think that I did, though a child's judgement of what qualifies as adequate care is often a bit skewed...

[Rose trails off, surprised by that hand at first. But it only shows for a moment before her face smooths back over, and she lets out a small laugh at Mavis' last statement.]

I can see that being a bit of a concern.

Well, you didn't have to take care of it all on your own when you were just little, did you? But... You're smart. I bet even if it was like that, you would've done well.

[Mavis laughs, as well, nodding.]

Exactly! My uncle is a werewolf; I can't have a pet dog.

Well, you're correct on that count. Turning into a cat is not something I am in the habit of doing. However, I would have thought that shockingly famliliar violet eyes and a complete refusal to do normal cat things, such as lick my butt, would have been clues aplenty.

[She's not being serious at all, though. Just needling. If John had been the cat it might have taken her awhile too.]
