[Wade has wandered up into one of the towers, clad in a warm red sweater and jeans and carrying a plate of cookies under one arm. She slides into the seat of the grand piano in the study, then places her cookies and journal down on the top, next to the bouquet of poinsetta. The piano itself is trimmed with gold tinsel.]

I can't believe it's that time of year again. Second Christmas in Paradisa. Too bad I can't ask Santa too see my friends from home.

[Idly she plays the first few notes of this familiar tune, then chuckles to herself.]

Well, at least I'm not stuck in tights and elf ears this time.

Also, I made cookies if anyone wants any. Guaranteed to be castle-influence free.

[And then she'll go back to playing, and starts to sing along. She's more than passable at both, if not exactly a prodigy.]

So...this isn't even my holiday, but since it's the fifth of November and all maybe we could all use a distraction, I've set up a little impromptu bonfire party outside. [She wished it up, actually. Too much work for a small girl like her]

Drinks and food provided. BYO fireworks, though. I wished up enough stuff already.

[filtered to Aaron]

I'm not sure I did it justice, but there you go. Now get down here and help me drink this beer.

[Wade will be outside in the courtyard, where there's a small bonfire blazing just on the edge. She's hauled out a few chairs and table from the dining room, and placed on that a giant bucket full of chilled beer and sparkling cider. The centerpiece of the food table is a pot of hearty beef stew with dumplings, and stack of bowls next to it, along with a smaller pot of vegetable curry for vegetarians like Wade. There's also sausage rolls, potato wedges, and berry tarts (since you've all had enough apples by now)]

[Perched on a rock just to the side of the road that led into town, Wade felt peaceful for the first time in months. The air was cool and sweet-smelling, the colors of the trees were beautiful, and she was pleasantly full from a lunch of an apple tart from one of the street vendors and the hard cider she was still halfway through nursing.

She opens up the journal to the sound of town traffic - a horse cart and the distant sound of children laughing as they played games in the orchard.

This is...nice. As much time as we all spend resenting the place, it's hard to appreciate the little things. We all needed a break from the usual.

If you haven't been down to town yet, you should come see it. It's so perfect. Reminds me a little bit of those fall carnivals we used to go to when I was little. All it's missing is a hay ride.

What do you guys usually do for fall? Any kind of holidays or traditions?

[Wade wasn't exactly a genius, but she could tell that the voices, once they had started, were concentrated pretty heavily in high-traffic areas. That made the kitchen an unusually chatty place, like eating in a crowded diner. Except, you know, one where all the patrons were invisible.

The dining room, by comparison, is quieter. Or maybe it's just more noise spread over a larger space. Either way, she decides to settle here for breakfast today. She's maybe halfway through her toast and coffee when the snippet of a conversation catches her attention. She sets down her mug and walks closer to the wall to see if she can hear it clearer.

'That's how I ended up with a tattoo of a aardvark on my boob.'

She can't help but laugh, perplexed as she was amused.

There has been some really strange people in this castle...

[However, as she listens, the conversations rather suddenly becomes completely unfunny.

'Through your death, he shall rise again.'

Oh my god...I think someone was murdered in here.

[Appetite suddenly lost]

[There were water balloons. In the hallway. In. The Hallway.

And the lobby. And...yep. Even the elevator.

Wade really didn't have to think twice about it. She was hot, clad only in shorts and a tank top, and the cool water sloshing around in these buckets was just the way to do it.

Olly olly oxen free!

[Beware, residents, because this Slider is on the prowl and she's armed. Anyone she sees will be her target for a water-balloon fight]

So apparently I don't even need the castle to help me forget that I've been here over a year now...

[This comes with a lot of feelings for Wade, most of which are melancholy, but she hates to dwell on those feelings. Sitting here crying won't send her home or reunite her with her friends. She has to look on the bright side.]

I haven't lived in one place for this long in...well, a long time. Seems like a whole lifetime ago, sometimes.

But anyway, happy anniversary to me, huh? [The sarcasm and denial is thick in her voice.]

I wished up a cake. You're all welcome to some. Otherwise I'm going to be severely tempted to eat it all myself. [Because crying isn't productive, but she can sure as hell eat her feelings instead. Booze will probably come later]

Maybe you know this already, but that wasn't like me at all, and I'm really really sorry for scaring you like that.

I'm not sure I should even bother, considering how much of a jerk you are, but...[sigh] I'm sorry.

[Over the journal, it's impossible not to hear the wind. It's distant but constant, howling through the branches of the trees. Over that sound, closer, is the sound of Wade laughing gleefully]

You know, I saw a kid ride a tornado once. Like a bull. I wonder if I could figure out how to do that.

[She pauses, laughing again]

Or maybe I could become like one myself. What would be more amazing than that? Nothing would stand in my way...

[Outside, at the edge of the gardens, Wade is on the lawn staring out at tornadoes and spinning herself in endless circles. She even wears a dress with a black and white spiral design. Viewed from above the effect would be nearly hypnotic. But to her there is only the endless spinning. She should be getting dizzy, but she isn't. The longer she goes the more the wind seems to kick up around her feet and swirl around her.

She might get her wish after all...

So you know how there was that room with the different seasons in it? Well, now it's a whole tower and it's all four seasons. You can have a picnic, go for a swim at the beach, go for a walk in the fall leaves, and then go build a snowman all in the same day. How about that?

If only we could pick what season we felt like experiencing every day...

Does anybody have a favorite? I'm not sure what I want to do first.

Anyway, I found her outside of the towers, like she was trying to get in, and I fed her because she looked hungry. She has a name-tag on her collar. It says 'Miss Maudie'?

[She hisses a little, sucking on her thumb]...somebody needs to trim your claws.

Oh, you have to be kidding me. Wearing this getup once was bad enough but it was never the only thing I could wear...

[There is already a small pile of duplicate elf costumes spread over her bed as the castle has replaced nearly her whole wardrobe.

She roots around in her closet, treating the other residents briefly to the sound of scraping hangers, muttering.

I'm going to freeze in this thing...

[She finds, finally, a cache of coats and sweaters in holiday colors, in varying shades of tacky, but at least they're something.]

There's a perfectly good miniature golf course going to waste in town. I'm going to take advantage of it before it's gets too cold. Anybody that wants to come, meet me at the fountain at noon, and we'll go from there.

Don't leave me waiting, okay?

That means you too. C'mon.

[Wade didn't overly object to her new outfit when she woke up in it yesterday, other than the ability to take it off for a bath. She wasn't fond of sleeping cowboy boots either. But it was Halloween, after all, and she was good about going along with a situation once it had fallen in her lap.

By the time the next day dawned, all objections had vanished from her mind and was replaced by a multitude of compulsions that would normally be foreign to her.

Which is why there is now one cowgirl in the lobby with a lasso and is currently in the process of herding a pack of bland-faced but obedient house ghosts with fake cow horns stuck on their heads.

Yee haw! Get on now! Yah! Into the kitchen with you...

I keep hearing voices, the castle gave me a straight-jacket when I asked for a jacket this morning, and...[A sudden screech of fear and surprise. Anybody happening past the kitchen might notice the girl dodge a knife that flies across the room and lodges, quivering, in the far wall]

That's it! I'm going into town for lunch. Anybody want to come with me?

So I guess there a lot of people here from Earth - or different versions of Earth - and it got me curious. See...and this might sound kind of wild, but, for the last year or so I've been traveling between parallel version of Earth. My friends and I call it sliding. There's hundreds or maybe even thousands of parallel worlds, but what if I've been to some of yours and didn't even know it. Of course, it might be kind of hard to tell, since we were kind of limited to Los Angeles and San Francisco, but it's worth a shot. I like hearing about it anyway.

If you're up for it, you could fill out this survey, or just tell me whatever you want, that's fine too

  • Where on Earth are you from?
  • What year was it?
  • What is the government like?
  • What is the economy like?
  • What is the technology like?
  • What is a recent or especially notable event in history?
  • Is there anything else unique about your Earth that you can think of?

There's one last question, and it's a bit more...specific to me...but I have to ask. I guess it's the real reason for all this. But, well, sometimes my friends and I run into parallel versions of ourselves. Doubles. And if there's one of for every world, maybe you guys have one too.

  • Have you even met someone named Quinn Mallory?

I'm really going to miss being a witch. Too bad I had to be thirteen at the same time, but it was so incredible to be able to do all of that. It was nice to feel special for once, even if...well...everybody was special.

Oh, but there was something else I wanted to ask! Some of you might know that Clow Reed is gone and that he was the owner of the pie shop in town. He hired me a few weeks ago as a waitress to help with the re-opening and well...it's kind of hard to run a pie shop without somebody who can actually make pie.

It seems like a shame to close the place, after all the work he put into sprucing it up, so what I guess we really need is a cook. Or a baker. Something like that.

Any takers?

You know, I can barely remember a long period of time when I haven't worked. At least not since high school when I was waiting tables to put gas in the car and buy junk food and all those things you really really need when you're a teenager. And it sort of kept going like that. When I started traveling a lot, we were getting part time jobs at nearly every stop [At least when they weren't imprisoned or lost or involved in some underground revolution for the fifth time at least]. And now I'm here and I don't really have to but it feels a little weird when I don't have anything else to do.

I guess that's my really long way of saying, does anybody know where I can get a job around here?

[The following begins to be written]

Dear journal,

[the pen writing this trails off with a slightly embarrassed laugh, and Wade speaks.]

Whoops! Sorry. That's kind of a force of habit.

I was just...thinking. I've traveled a lot but I've never been to this city before, even when I was pretty close to it a lot times. Which is kind of a shame, because it's pretty nice here. This park, for example, is gorgeous, and there's so much to do.

Uh...just steer clear of the natural history museum. Trust me on that one.

But anyway, I've been trying to read up on this place. I'm not as good with this stuff as some of my friends, but if I'm getting this right, we're not really in San Diego, since there are other Earth cities I know on the map. And people were taken there before, right?

The thing that really bugs me is - what about all these people? What happens to them when we go back to the castle like everyone is saying we will. Do they, like, stay here forever or are they like us somehow? I hope they get to go home to their families too.

But, for now I have a wallet full of money from a very apologetic corporation. For the record, InGen, I don't know if all this can make me forget that I became fast food for a dinosaur.

...It certainly doesn't hurt though.

[Currently, Wade can be found enjoying lunch at a beautiful cafe overlooking a sculpture garden in Balboa Park, but she can also be found shopping downtown in the morning, where she picked up the pretty dress she's wearing now, or elsewhere in the park like the artist's village or trying for the brass ring at the old carousel. No matter where she is, she's trying her best to have some fun]
