Today I have been in this place for a year. There is still much I do not understand about its ways as well as the ways of the people who live here, including all of you. There are times where I think I am adjusting, where I think I am understanding, but then something happens and it is clear that I am not.

I am not sure if I will ever understand.

[Maria's reply comes late and slow; she's spent a considerable amount of time staring at her journal this past week, watching words write themselves and listening to sound come from it. None of that should be possible, but she's already seen several impossible things here.]

You've nothing to worry about from me. I may have changed my alliance, but that doesn't mean I'm out to kill those who would have been my allies before.

[It took Connor awhile to get used to it, too. Even now, he prefers writing than speaking into the pages.]

I was not sure how strongly you felt in your defection.

[The same for her. This is just odd.]

From what I understand, there's several centuries' difference between the Templars I served alongside and this Haytham fellow. Even if I had not abandoned their cause, he wouldn't be guaranteed my loyalty.

He is from the late 18th century, but several years ahead of me. The Templars have gone through many changes in the time between us; now they are largely concerned with gaining political favour in order to control the populace.

As there are no politics here, though, I thought it prudent to request those of my Order stay their hand.

Quite prudent. I am not of your order, though.

I know. But you are more acquainted with us than any stranger here.

If you would like to distance yourself from us, I will not address you on such matters again.

I'm not looking for distance, only making a point. I do appreciate the alert; there's always the chance this man would not take kindly to my defection, time difference aside.

There are none, save my Mentor. This man Haytham Kenway ordered their complete extermination. So it falls to me.

[She doesn't answer for a while.]

That's a great deal of responsibility for a boy.

[He generally takes offense in being called a boy, because as far as he's concerned, he's a man -- but Maria doesn't seem to be saying it to be insulting or condescending. He sees her point.]

Does he know you're to take his life one day?

That I do not know. He is from in the future... he is much older than he ought to be. So I can imagine he must, if he knows who I am by sight.

[Connor can't really imagine not being forthcoming about being an Assassin in the future.]

Then he must have a steady mind or be equally convinced of the pointlessness of fighting here, if he hasn't made any advances of his own.

[Yeah, he's not Sir Subtle.]

[It's more likely, Connor thinks, that Haytham is reluctant to kill his own son -- but he knows he shouldn't cling to that hope. Nor should he really admit this to Maria, because that's awkward as fuck and he's trying to keep it under wraps as best he can.]

Perhaps he only knows he is outnumbered.
