family reunion day 2; dated to 9:00 AM
[Breakfast with the family is a great way to start out the morning, right? But with a reunion this big, tables outside is the only way it's really going to work. Resort workers are standing over tables spread out with heated trays of scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, French toast, and biscuits and gravy. There are more tables with plates arranged with sliced pieces of fruit. There's another long table devoted entirely to different kinds of cereal, with gallons and gallons of milk to pour over it. And of course there are dozens of round tables set up where people can actually sit and eat with each other before really starting out their day -
There's also the grassy lawn facing the lake where those who would rather can take their plates and sit in a slightly more informal setting.
This is a chance to hang out with some of the family that isn't so closely related to you! Enjoy that.]

Fairly certain they're safe to step on.

[Yup. Because that's completely sane.]

I make it a point to, actually. [His eyes are his bread and butter.] Would you like me to show you?
no subject
I would wish you luck in it but sometimes I think that's more to do with cursing.

[He lifts one foot, cocks an eyebrow at her (watching her face very carefully), and steps into the shadow.]

A tiny keen escapes her]
...Why did you do that...?
no subject
What did I do?
no subject
...You killed it.

She gives his a disgusted look, backing up slightly with widened eyes.]
It's all over your shoe.
no subject
There's nothing there.
no subject
Oh shit.
She blinks a few times, hoping looking away and back again will clear the hallucination from her eyes.]
...No?

no subject
No. Empty shadow. Empty, that's all.
no subject
All right?
no subject
[She doesn't say the words dismissively, just like they came out of her mouth disjointed, the pattern wrong for the place, old fashioned and missing pieces.]

[He seems to get the right message, regardless. He tilts his head toward the buffet.]
Breakfast?
/3 weeks late. Please don't feel like you have to respond
Yes. Please, yes.

[Let her have the basic, let her reorient in what was and should be. She could get there, if they were careful enough.]

Eggs, then. Scrambled?
no subject
[Because it's easier, she takes a slow, deep breath and slides a little closer to balanced.]
no subject
Is that all?
[He doesn't seem to be getting anything for himself. John had him nibble some already.]
no subject
Thank you very much. Please don't step in shadows.
[Oh damn, that came out. Crap. He was supposed to be forgetting her odd behavior.]
