one abstraction

[Although she'd gone to sleep in a small, quiet, dimly lit room and awoken the next morning in very similar surroundings, Rin had known immediately she was nowhere she'd ever been before. The strange book lying next to her head had only confirmed her suspicions.

Now she is planted in the castle's large lobby. Any passersby might notice the girl sitting against a wall, hunched over her journal and turning the pages carefully with her feet, as she has no arms. She's taking in all the information she can, learning with every turn of the page. After a while, she speaks up, more to herself than to anyone or anything else.]

Am I the only artist here? The only student? Lots of butterflies are making it confusing.

Sometimes! Not very much here, though. Is that what you do?

Yes. I paint all the time. [And that's not much of an exaggeration.] Can I get paints and canvas here?

You can! If you're in the castle, all you need to do is wish for them. Out loud, I mean.

Like, "I wish for paint"?

[The castle, being what it is, obliges with a large pail of house paint.]

Whoever fills wishes around here is kind of stupid.

I got paint. The kind for painting a house. [Her frown is almost audible as she looks at the barf-yellow paint.] And yes, it's a horrible color. If it's magic, it's not very good magic, is it?

It's good magic! It just needs to be really specific. You should wish for 'really pretty paint for art!'

[dandelionwine]

If you say so. [A pause. She's thinking about whether or not she really believes this.] I wish for really pretty paint. For art.

[And there's a very tiny but audible gasp when she realizes Jade was telling the truth.]

[nukeoleptic]

[ Jade hears that little gasp and her whole face lights up. ]

Did you get it?

[dandelionwine]

I did. It's a perfect shade of blue. Like the sky on a hot afternoon.

[She's very amazed by this, although trying hard not to show it.]

[ She can sort of hear it. :') ]
