Is there some kind of law enforcement organization here? I'm a cop back home, and I was curious if there's any need for that service.

If there is a law enforcement agency in this place they're doing a poor job of it if you aren't aware of its existence.

I haven't been here very long. And apparently, we can just wish for things and they'll appear. I wasn't sure if crime would be issue here.

[Thankfully even though he may not be able to see her, she does have a lovely voice so she's getting a much warmer reception than most of the other people he's spoke with today]

I've just arrived this morning, as it were. I'm still not so sure about that whole wishing business.

I haven't tried it yet, but it seems a bit outrageous to me as well.

Do you have some kind of supernatural powers? Magic, or advanced technology?

No supernatural powers, no magic. But I do have a gun.

That's a place to start, at least. But I think that quite a few of us here have no fear of guns.

The people in town -- the natives of this place or whatever -- do their own thing. If there's a crime between themselves, they take care of it.

As far as us people, not really. There used to be a thing called Peace Patrol, but with guys from all over the place with different ideas of how the law worked, it kind of started turning into a martial law thing so it disbanded. Now it's pretty much an anarchy, so. On the plus side, we usually got our fair share of superheroes and vigilantes -- and people who are cops or spooks or whatever -- to smack around anybody who's being a dick.

[Kate laughs at that last line.]

Well, that's convenient at least. I don't think I even realized there were natives people in addition to us.

Well, yeah, the people down in the city. I mean, most of 'em; some people from the castle move out there...

[He can explain this better.] There's us -- the people magically whisked away here -- and there's the others, who are born, live, and die here like it's a regular world.

[That makes sense, Kate thinks. As much as magical villages can make sense.]

I can't imagine just growing up here. I can barely accept that I'm here right now.

I think they're used to it. Probably how if you grew up in Texas, you'd never imagine growing up in Alaska.

There are no governments in this castle, nor any military. Unless you wish to be a mercenary for hire, you are out of work, dolcezza.

Is there much business for a mercenary for hire?

As far as I have seen in a year, no.

My friend is a mercenary. [By which he means himself.] There's been no work for him at all.

The mercenary business is tough as it is. I can see how a mercenary would have trouble finding work here.

Have you done work as a mercenary? I was under the impression that law enforcement in your time was an arm of those who govern the land, rather than contracted men.
