07 DNA Strands - People Don't Understand...

[Having had a fair amount of time to himself, and somewhat encouraged to continue his practicing by his time as an old man, today finds Evan in the music room. He can be heard at different times playing a variety of different instruments, until finally he knits them all together to play a song, which he pulls his journal close so people can hear it. After he finishes, he flops down in a bean bag chair he'd wished for, and stretches his arm out to pulls his journal over to speak to it.]

Hey Break, I think I finally figured out the guitar. Wanna jam sometime? Would anyone like to come play some music?

Hey, did you know that there's a Danger Room facility out on the grounds? A guy named Peter Petrelli told me about it, and took me out there to help me train my powers a bit. If you wanted to train on your own, or if you maybe wanted to do some cross-training with me, we could probably ask Peter to make you a copy of the access card, if you wanted.

[He had been listening to Evan play for a little. So it isn't too long before he answers.]

I heard. I'd certainly be up for it.

Heh, yeah. I suppose most everyone did, if they had their journal open. I was just thinking about this song my cousin Jono wrote, so I decided to see what I could do with it. I think he was writing about how most people see mutants, like me.

I'm up in the music room now, if you wanna come up. There's all sorts of different instruments up here, guitars and drums and pianos and stuff, and a lot of old vinyl records that I'm pretty sure were Jono's.

Oh? Well it sounded alright to me. I've been there once before, I wont be long.

[And it doesn't take too long before Evan is joined in the room by a sunglasses and scarf wearing robot.]

[When Break enters the room, he'll find Evan sitting on a bench with not one...not two...but three electric guitars and an electric bass guitar being held in the multitude of hand and arms Evan is currently sporting, and he's playing a song that seems to take all of his concentration, as his glowing red eyes dart from instrument to instrument, his fingers moving faster than would be possible for a human. When he finishes, he looks up and notices Break, and smiles.]

Hi! I guess you could say I've been practicing. I have my powers to thank for letting me learn so quickly, I think.

[He sets the guitars and sundry down on the floor, and retracts the extra appendages back into his person, shivering as each one disappears into his skin.]

[...That's impressive, to say the least. He watches as Evan puts the instruments down and retracts all the extra limbs.]

I suppose so. Working to be a one man band now?

[He shrugs, a little embarrassed.]

Not really, just wanted to see how far I could go with it. I've never tried having that many hands all doing different things before. Wanted to see if I could concentrate well enough to make it work. It's...harder than it looks.

[He stretches an arm out to grab an acoustic guitar that lay abandoned across the room.]

Besides, it's more fun to play with other people.

[he smiles.]

I can only imagine. You seemed to have a decent handle on it though.

[There's a slight smile back as he eyes the guitar.]

Well, you did mention the both of us playing.

I'm getting better all the time. It's like a muscle, you know? Exercise it enough, and it'll remember what it's supposed to do.

[He plucks at the guitar a bit, tuning it.]

So what can you play, what songs do you know?

I know one tune I made myself. Anything else I normally just free style a bit. I've been learning how to play guitar.

[He's still far from being an expert though.]

Yeah? I'd love to hear it, if you don't mind sharing. I could probably teach you a thing or two, too, since I've been so quick to pick it up.

[Blame it on having a cousin who's a musician, and an aptitude for pretty much anything he sets his mind to.]

This one I'm not too keen on changing this one.

[It was his tune, he made it himself and it was precious to him. He pauses for a moment before he starts to whistle the tune. ]

[Evan listens intently while Break whistles, each note of the tune worming it's way into his brain. After Break finishes, Evan will pick up one of his discarded electric guitars and play an interpretation of the tune Break just whistled.]

This is really cool, Break. I like this song.

[He smiles.]

[He can't help but smile at that, it was interesting to hear the different take on it.]

Hm. Good, you really are getting better with that.

There is? That's wonderful! There isn't much worth fighting in the woods so far, I've found.

I'm stuck in the theatre right now, but once I'm free, I would be happy to train with you.

Yeah, I bet not. I'll talk to Peter next time he and I train together, and ask him if he'd make you an access card. As far as I can tell, it's just like the Danger Room back home, so it shouldn't take too long to make training programs and stuff.

I played around with the sim programming when we lived at the Mansion - I should be able to come up with something fairly quickly.

It seems to be based on the same principals, too. Holograms, but then there're real obstacles that can come out of the walls and stuff, so you don't get too used to fighting stuff that can't really hurt you on the lower difficulties.

Well, there are ways around the safeties in the programming, too.

I don't doubt it. Don't think I'm tough enough yet to wanna go that far, but you're welcome to.

We will see. It has been a number of years since I've run a Danger Room simulation.

I bet it'll be a cakewalk though, compared with what you're used to. I'm not anywhere near that gifted.

I am also, unfortunately, somewhat out of practice.

And while my genetic enhancements give me natural talent, it's only honed through years of training.

Yeah, I suppose. Any time something majorly weird happens around here, everyone's made human, so you can't really use your powers then.

That's what Wolverine says, too. You can be the most powerful mutant on earth, but it doesn't mean anything if you don't know how to use it.

There is also only so much practice one can take out on punching bags, trees, and the wildlife around here.

And Logan is right. Understanding and controlling one's power is everything.
