[with that, Gale gathers up his things and heads up to the castle. he leaves a bit early, though, as he has a Secret Mission. making a quick trek up one of the towers, he carefully circumvents Once-ler's traps - ain't no thing for a trapping genius! - and carefully hangs a wooden sign on the door. it's woodburned, with an intricate border of thorns and leaves. the words in the middle plainly read: Hermit Within: Do Not Dislodge. errand taken care of, he slips back down to the lobby to wait for Hermione, where anyone else is also completely free to come and say hello before they head out.]

[instead of responding with a note, Hermione just heads on down to the lobby. Being on the fifth floor makes it a reasonable distance. She has no idea how to dress for these things so she just went for warm clothes because it's still cold out there]

Hey! [he waves and grins, getting up off the couch he was waiting on] I hope you layered. That's good for the walk, but once we start practicing, you'll warm up fast.

[she smiles and gives a little wave in return] I figured as much. That's why I brought my bag, so I can put my coat and things away while we're practicing.

[she holds up her tiny beaded bag to show him]

[okay, normally he thinks Hermione is a pretty smart cookie, but that tiny little bag has him giving her A Look]

.... Hermione. One sleeve of your coat won't fit in there.

I charmed it; it's already holding a lot. [she gives him a secret smile] I fit a full-sized portrait inside back home, just as an example.

You..... Wait, really? .... Is it heavy? How much have you got in there?

[she opens the bag and tilts it forward so he can see. There are books, a cauldron, several notebooks, flashlights, a compass, etc.]

I made sure to pack for several scenarios, just to be on the safe side.

[he leans down and looks, then lets out a whistle] You sure did. ... You're not hiding any missing people in there, are you?

[Gale, stop messing with your magic friend, you ass]

I never thought to try fitting a living person inside. Would you like to test it out?

[yeah don't mess with her bro]

[his eyes widen, and he holds up his hands. he may be cool with magic existing, but he's still got serious issues about being a willing participant unless it's Ino's chakra healing]

Nonono, it - it's fine, if you say there's nobody in there, I believe you.

I was only kidding, you know. Transporting people is what the TARDIS is for. Come on, I want to get started on training.

Right. Sorry... [yeek. he heads for the door, knowing she'll follow him, and starts leading the way down to the range. it's a sunny day - blue sky, bright and clear - but it's still crisp and chilly, and the wind keeps it from being warm enough for anything to start melting yet. damn you, winter, go away]

The TARDIS ... yeah, I remember that thing, we took it out to the border when we went to Lastlook. ... Isn't the man who owned it gone, though? I haven't heard him around in a while.

[she does follow after him, pulling her coat a bit more around herself. She's looking forward to winter being over. Knowing Paradisa, that could be tomorrow or next month]

Yes, the Doctors are gone from the castle. It's strange not having them around. I read through the older journals, and they've always been here in one form or another.

He seemed like an okay guy. If the castle likes having him around that much, it might bring him back. .... It did for Katniss.

I feel bad for saying it, but I really hope so. The castle doesn't feel the same without the Doctor.

Then I hope he comes back, if you feel that strong about it. [he stretches his arms above his head as they walk, tilting his head back to look up at the clouds]

Man, I am more than ready for a little more blue in this sky. It's getting ridiculous.

This weather does seem to be lingering for a long time this year. But it will be good for practice. You never know what sort of conditions we'll be put in by the castle.

[he tries! they're walking at a brisk enough pace that they should reach the range in a few minutes]

Yeah, like when everything turned to ice. I think that was Tue most inconvenient thing it's done. ... Well. Aside from the day I spent as a hat rack.

A hat rack? [sorry, she has to laugh] I think the worst was when I was some odd British rock character.

You were what kind of rock....?

British, like where I'm from. It's a type of music. I'll ask Mark to play some on his next broadcast if you're interested in hearing it. ... I also had to wear a sailor girl's uniform.

... That was all at the same time? Sounds like one hell of a loss. What happened?

I'm not sure. I think I was supposed to be some kind of fighter, using British Rock as a weapon. Needless to say, it was silly.

I think silly's the most understated description you could give something like that. [he shakes his head. seriously, the things the castle does to people] ... What were you even supposed to be fighting?

You know, I really have no idea. Nargles, perhaps? [she laughs] That's a make-believe creature from my world. According to my friend Luna, they steal things like people's socks.

[...Why are there sounds outside his door? There shouldn't be sounds outside his door, he's the only one on the top of this tower since Tony left.

Carefully picking up the nearest weapon to hand (a frying pan) he cautiously opens the door, deadly weapon of deadlyness partially raised...until he realises who it is]

...Do I even want to know what you're doing? I'm guessing no, but I'm gonna ask anyway.

[He's not even going to question how Gale didn't set off the traps. He's accepted this as a Thing His Friends Can Do.

Wow did he just call Gale a friend in his head? Huh. How about that]

[oh crapcrapcrap, busted. Gale looks like an Avox in hovercraft lights for a second: this was supposed to be a Secret Mission, not an Outward Friendshippy Thing. everyone knows Teal Guys don't do those. and they - the professional knitter and the dude holding a woodburned sign - are the Realest Men ever. but because of that fact, he can also play it totally cool]

Oh, hey. Sorry if I interrupted you. I was just gonna leave this. No big deal. I know how you get when you're... [hermiting] Busy.

[They truly are the Realest Men. They certainly don't get bogged down by feelings or the like. The Once-ler casts his a confused look, before glancing at the sign.

Oh. That was actually a nice gesture. A small smile creeps across his face, because he'll never get used to people actually being nice to him]

Wow...that's. [No wait, he clears his throat. No feelings. Manly time] That's pretty cool. Did you make it yourself?

[Real Men are, however, allowed to smile, and seeing Once do so makes Gale grin. he was afraid the scrawny dude would take offense at it, consider it some kind of mockery, considering how little regard his own girlfriend had for such things as hermitage.]

I did, yeah. I used some of the scrap lumber from the remodeling. [see, ain't no big, just made you a sign out of a piece of our house because I can respect the fact you don't wanna live in it]

[He's glad at least ONE of the Ohana understands this basic concept. The others seem to really struggle with it]

It probably won't work, because some people [some people including that aforementioned girlfriend] choose to ignore it. But hey, it might deter some people. Thanks, man.

[hey, he's the one who used to run out and hang in the forests and sit in the trees and brood about how much he hated the government, okay. he gets it. he may not agree with it in a place like this, where you need other people to keep from losing your head? but he gets it.]

Well. Brooding anyway. Still, that confirmation of family means a lot. More than he's really willing to show, but mean a lot it does]

Oh. [He clears his throat a little, trying to remove the goofy grin off his face. MANLY THINGS] How's the building going, anyway?

{oh, do you not have any forests? whoops. how'd that happen? oh right. yeah, enjoy your hermit sign, he made it out of trees, even. not that he's even THINKING about that angle, otherwise he'd kind of feel like an ass. It's coming along, I got all the boards sorted out, and moved up to the attic. [he rubs at the back of his neck idly] I figure I should at least be able to get the framework for the walls nailed up in the next few days.

And you're still doing it alone? [Is that some judging in his tone? Maybe. He'd hoped the House of Insanity would at least try to pitch in]

South and Ino are helping, and Allen used his car to help me pick up the lumber. That's kind of about it, but it's okay. I can't expect everyone to. I'm pretty sure if Tsuna tried to swing a hammer he'd take his thumb off in the process, and Crowley would probably get sick if he actually did anything that even looked like work.

...Wait South? The...crazy drunk woman? She's there now too?

But hey, nice to hear they're actually capable of helping. I'd of put my money against it.

She is, yeah. I guess she had a big fight with some people she knows, and she came out to the house to cool down - and she's just sort of stayed.

[he looks like he's not sure how he feels about that. he knows what it is to be angry with people, most definitely, but he also knows how much damage it does to a friendship to stay angry. Katniss' first time living in the castle taught him that well enough]

Wow. So the crazy in that house just continues to snowball. Good to know.

[He looks at the object in question still in his hands and clears his throat] Probably not. There probably would have been more screaming and inefficient flailing than any actual hitting.

No kidding. [he figures there's no need for elaboration on that point]

[The Once-ler shrug, somewhat awkwardly]

Yeah, well. Not all of us come from places where we have to...y'know, fight for our lives every day.

[Look at him, acknowledging that some people have a harder life than he does]

So, uh - I'll let you get back to doing ... whatever you were actually gonna be doing. With that frying pan.

[The Once-ler glances at his frying pan again, before clearing his throat]

Uh yeah. Happy...house building, I guess.
