I guess it wasn't really that long ago. Kronos reformed himself by recruiting demigods to his army, and he was releaseing Titans. I... um. I accidentally released one of them myself. [guilty pause of guilt]
So anyway, Kronos and the Titans were after Olympus, which in my time is set on the six hundredth floor of the Empire State Building. All us demigods and the Hunters of Artemis gathered together to defend it. Kronos and Morpheus made sure none of the mortals would interfere by keeping them out of the Manhattan area.
[he pauses. It's still hard to talk about this. Even as he speaks he can see his beloved city at war]
2/??
I've seen the lights go out on Broadway
I saw the Empire State laid low
And life went on beyond the Palisades
They all brought Cadillacs
And left there long ago
They held a concert out in Brooklyn
To watch the island bridges blow
They turned our power down
And drove us underground
But we went right on with the show
[he can hear himself singing, but it's almost like someone else is doing it. A son of Apollo, maybe, performing at the campfire on that night after it was all over. The emotion in Percy's voice tells just how deeply this affects him]
I've seen the lights go out on Broadway
I saw the ruins at my feet
You know we almost didn't notice it
We'd seen it all the time on Forty-Second Street
They burned the churches up in Harlem
Like in the Spanish civil war
The flames were ev'rywhere
But no one really cared
It always burned up there before
3/??
I've watched the mighty skyline fall
The boats were waiting at the battery
The union went on strike
They never sailed at all
They sent a carrier out on Norfolk
And picked the Yankees up for free
They said that Queens could say
They blew the Bronx away
And sank Manhattan out at sea
[his voice drops quiet now. There are actual tears in his eyes. It all ended well, but reliving it is still very emotional for him. He can see his parents asleep in their car, can feel the hopelessness of the situation. Beckendorf, Silena, Luke, so many young lives lost...]
You know those lights were bright on Broadway
That was so many years ago
Before we all lived here in Florida
Before the Mafia took over Mexico
There are not many who remember
They say a handful still survive
To tell the world about
The way the lights went out
And keep the memory alive

He can't. This song hits him too hard, when he thinks about all the people he had lost, those close to him. People he would never see again, never speak to again. People who had lost their families, their own friends, because of him and his. In the mafia there was always too much bloodshed, too much death. Even when things had been good, people had still died.
