[There's some nervous clearing of the throat. David still can't throw off that the feeling of talking into this book... radio... thing... is just wrong.]

If I've got this right, I've been kidnapped by a castle with powers yet to be determined, it's taken something from me, and I can "wish" [You can almost hear the quotation marks] for almost anything I want.

Not to mention this place's random habit of making people do it's bidding by means of "magic." Like that impromptu singing session a few days ago.

[There's a sigh, a flick of a lighter, and a pause.]

I take it no-one has use of an Oriental Studies professor around here, huh?

It's huge. I've already found a load of Chinese books that are really rare to get outside of the People's Republic.

I must have walked past them the time I passed through.

They're not everyone's thing, but getting into the PRC is pretty difficult.

I suppose that's a plus side to this place.

That seems to be the case. Regardless, the library has enough study material, so a professor would be obsolete. Perhaps you could find something else to do? The castle can be unbearably... dull at times.

Well, study material is one thing, but some people benefit from more structured learning. [Defending his title. It's natural.]

But, you're right. I doubt people around here want to know about Emperor Meiji's rule over Japan.

The Meiji-era was an interesting time. It is a turning point in my country's history.

And yeah, it's a very interesting period of history. Not that long ago, too.

Yeah, well, specific world knowledge kinda doesn't matter when you have a library with a mint condition copy of Dà Xué. It's hard to get into the PRC to see original copies at the Siku Quanshu libraries.

Well, you have to admit, we did have some good reasons to distrust foreigners - though half the time I'd count in that number.

Knowing a thing and being able to teach it are very different things, too.

And, yeah, I'd say you do. There's plenty of examples.

Half - which depending on the prevailing sentiment is sometimes worse than none at all.

And I can't say our empire-building was much better, really.
