Okay so... I've been spending a little time outside my normal activities -- fyi I think it's a little impossible to burn this place down. [ because that's totally comforting, ashley. ]

So I was wondering something. How many of you actually cook? Do a lot of you guys just wish up your meals or raid the cabinets? I'm starting to think I might need to employ a good teacher or bribe someone to do my cooking for me. Or I could just hike out to town every time I want to eat.

Just wondering what the rest of you do. And I'm totally not in the kitchen right now, fyi.

[ she lies. she's totally in the kitchen. but she's not responsible for the charred remains of that plate of fries on the table.

[ she's honestly surprised, but she'll take it. ] It's gotta be better than my guessing game.

[ that's her way of taking him up on the offer and saying "thank you" all at once. ]

[Hrmmmm.] Tomorrow afternoon?

[The next day, a casually dressed North shows up in the kitchens a little after noon...]

[ she's going to be a few minutes late since the drama from the previous night drove her to someone else's room. this will be her last stop before she leaves for a while.

she looks a bit uneasy and upset, but she's not commenting on it for the moment, just looking around for the guy she's supposed to meet. ]

[He's digging through the cabinets as she arrives, but when he sees the newcomer, he straightens. Frowning, he sets the ingredients he was gathering on the counter.]

Hi...

[ she glances from him to the ingredients and back. ]

Ashley. I take it you're the guy I'm supposed to meet?

Cooking 101?

[He tries a little smile, hoping for the best.]

I'm North.

Got it in one.

[ bad semi-unintentional pun aside, ashley does try to smile. ]

So... what am I learning today, chef?

[ does joking help? because she'll do a lot of that to distract herself unless he shows he doesn't like them. ]

[Hey, he's fine with doing whatever makes people happy, to a degree. He's just got the caring big brother thing going on.]

I think we said waffles, right? They're pretty basic. I cheated and wished up a waffle iron.

[ considering the person she considered a big brother isn't here, she can deal with this. she knows how to handle it. ]

Right, waffles. [ the comment on cheating gets a genuine smile out of her. ] Good thing I'm not keeping score here.

So, what's first?

I'd be down, what, ten points? [He has such a good-natured tone.] If you were keeping score, that is.

First you have to get everything together. [He finds the last few ingredients, then points to each one in turn.]

Flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, milk, butter, two eggs, and a little bit of vanilla, just to spice things up.

At least. [ she tosses him a teasing smirk. ] Maybe fifteen. It is an object instead of an ingredient.

[ she watches carefully. if there's a system or something to this, she'll get it, and at least she's very good at memorizing things. ]

Oo vanilla. Good taste there.

Right, right. I apologize in advance. But at least I didn't go with frozen waffles? Now that's cheating.

That is cheating. That's an auto-fail. [ she laughs, though. ] Good thing you didn't go for that one.

That's harsh!

[He's clearly joking.]

Do you mind grabbing a big bowl?

It's only fair.

[ she grins and moves to grab one. it's probably too big, but she holds it out. ]

This work?

[A nod. Better too big than too little,]

That'll do. And a big spoon. And you know what? A ladle, if you see one.

[ it'll take her a little hunting around, but eventually she finds the requested items and brings them over. ]

All right. Now what?

[ at least she's a fairly eager student? that has to make up for her lack of experience. ]

[That's a plus! But give him a minute to think.]

I'm going to make you do it, by the way. I'll just assist. Does that work?
