Were you at that game last night? [For James, he sounds somewhere between tired and annoyed and he's really just hoping Nikola heard about that Helen thing.]

It seems as if we have a bit of a problem, and I need to clear some things up before you get blindsided. What do you know about Helen's engagement?

I'm sorry about last night, Ashley told me what happened. It seems as if there's a larger problem occurring, and I very much owe you an explanation for it. It's a bit of a long story, and I'm not exactly certain what you know.

We need to talk, preferably before your daughter does something rash.

[But then he takes a moment to clear his throat and then comment on something that was just said.]

Here I thought the only thing I'd have to worry about last night would be those of you with hangovers. For those going to the Clinic, do try and not give them a difficult time for the donations. While I'm not there today, those that are stayed away from the liquor to insure your lives would be easier today, some support for such a service would go a long way to insuring things are done smoothly.

[Yes he totally approves of the donations thing going on.]

I know she was engaged to a man named John. That he killed a lot of women. That was was one of you Five with...was it teleporting powers? Oh and he's Ashley's father.

Yes, teleporting powers and having some creature inside of him that drove him to such things. [Sighing, so much sighing.]

Helen believes he was entirely innocent in all of this. [Can you hear how angry he is?]

People do and think ridiculously stupid things when they're in love.

In the course of his teleporting he attracted an energy creature that inhabited him, and according to Helen, that's what turned him into a killer.

[Oh no, don't say that, he's wincing over here.]

For better consideration, Maladict, she wanted to kill John for nearly killing Ashley. She doesn't love him, not anymore, not after that. [Because it's easier to use Ashley as an example than himself.]

And ti couldn't be he was already capable of that anyway?

[You people and your stupidly complex lives] I should rather hope she wouldn't. I'd be very worried about her mental being if she didn't want him dead for that.

...You didn't answer my question. What went on to make him smell like he'd taken a booze bath?

Nikola went to some drinking game last night, same place that Helen went too. Where Ashley learned Helen thinks John is innocent when she's the one that shot him and gave him the scar on his face. [He's just a little angry and frustrated over here, don't mind him.] She thinks John had nothing to do with turning, ladies that work in a certain adult profession into near neckless corpses on the street.

This is why I always say it's a stupid idea to get absolutely hammered. Drunk people have their stupid filters turned off.

So I'm guessing there is a lot of drama right now.

Ashley, understandably, is upset. But I thought you should know, just in case things get, increasingly more touchy than they are.

Well, yes. Discworld vampires can't abide alcohol. So I figured that one out after watching people get stupidly drunk. [She'll let it go...for now]

I admit I was rather concerned regarding the entire matter. An explanation would be very much appreciated.

Little. I am aware that it did not end well, to say the least, but I did not feel it my place to ask further.

That John left her, willingly. That he didn't kill anyone, that he just disappeared one night and I was tortured by some lucky Nazi officer that figured out how my device worked.

Ashely ran out last night, I don't know what happened she just..

She was so angry with me, I know I was wrong for not telling her earlier about John but I never thought it would lead to this.

She did what I'd expect her too. [Though in the grand scheme of things her running out isn't a surprise and really safe considering what else she could do here.]

And, that's because Helen, there's a [HOW TO DO THIS?] bit of a snag in what you said John was like, at least in both her and my own perspective.

Yes, I suppose I should have expected it to, my failings as a mother. [Because clearly everything wrong in Ashely's life is Helen's fault.]

[Oh god, Helen no. That's not what he said damn it.] No, I meant more that she's Ashley, and she's a willful young lady, it's no reflection on you. Just who she is.

[And that's a sigh.] I mean that, in our experiences, as well as Nikola's, we know him as a very different man. Though this would be better said in person, perhaps we can talk somewhere??

[She has to pause and nod, though since that won't come through the journal and breathes and speaks.]

More the age she was raised in. [James now is not the time to be making cracks about when Helen had Ashley.

By the door? We can take a walk so others don't hear us, it'd be for the best I think.

[She needed to get a sweater and take another glass of water, her head was threatening a low throb and she didn't want to risk more.]

[Yup, he's just going to shut his journal and head for the door, jacket on and really just looking the tiniest bit nervous, which he squashes down as quick as possible.]

[Helen is waiting for him, wrapped in a sweater but looking as though she hasn't slept all night. That was only probably because she hadn't.]

[Which is really well, to be expected and he just reaches for the door, frowning.]

You've been drinking water, yes?

Yes, I have. And no tea as yet, so forgive my irritability.

Thank you. [She nodded and stepped through the door, waiting for him just beyond it.]

Of course. [And once she's outside, he's putting on a hat and following, offering her his arm.]

John's a, suitably touchy topic for those of us here that know him, for a variety of reasons. [He pauses to think.] What do you recall of our time during the invasion of Normandy? The weather machine.

He is an emotional subject for all of us. [She nodded and threaded her arm through his, her head resting on the much needed strength of his shoulder.]

It was horrid, I remember that. I thought I was going to lose you and that terrified me. What was done to you was inhuman.

[He lets her, looking up at the sky and sighing.]

Do you recall who killed the man responsible for it? [He's noticeably keeping his voice calm at all of this.]

A German officer, the name escapes me now...

[She frowned because she realized when he asked she could not recall the details surrounding the man. She was just there, generically but nothing about him stood out.]
