28 - Bre - Action / Dictated

[ So perhaps he hadn't been on the Event Horizon, with all of its death and trauma, but Duke had been aware for to hear all that had gone on, to hear of what they needed to do.... And feel completely useless without his powers and with his loss.

Which is probably why the journal picks up the sounds of wood-on-wood, clacking motions like something is being struck repeatedly- then the whistle of air of a miss. Duke has made his way to that salle he was helping Vanyel build prior to that world change, and is.. well, attempting to work on swordskills. Only because he can't see-

Stop moving- [ That next sound of striking is a bit like flesh and wood, and Duke snarls, shaking out his arm and...

Well, a foul mood and magic don't go well with practicing without magic. This clatter of wood is the poor dummy shooting back from a hand that didn't even reach it, falling with a crash-

He is just going to stand there for a little bit, shaking his arm out. There's a faintly glowing line on the floor in a good 12 foot circle about where he and the dummy... were in the center. The circle didn't stop the dummy from going partially out, so it must be for something else...

[that's a voice he hasn't heard in a while....]

Duke? Are you alright?
theabjectauthor: (I am perplexed by you.)

[personal profile] theabjectauthor 2013-05-13 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you are unharmed, sir, but you seem perturbed. Is something else bothering you?
theabjectauthor: (I am attempting to be social.)

[personal profile] theabjectauthor 2013-05-13 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I see. Is there any way I can be of assistance?
theabjectauthor: (I am knowledgeable)

[personal profile] theabjectauthor 2013-05-15 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
A very dear, departed friend of mine was an accomplished baticeer ... she always used to marvel at their powers of echolocation. Perhaps if you put something on the thing you wish to track that made an intermittent, constant sound, you could follow that with your ears.
theabjectauthor: (I am perplexed by you.)

[personal profile] theabjectauthor 2013-05-20 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
... Might I ask what the purpose is, then?
theabjectauthor: (I am attempting to be social.)

[personal profile] theabjectauthor 2013-05-22 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm afraid you may have to be more specific, Duke. .... There are, after all, several ways one can be useful without magic.
theabjectauthor: (I dropped it and now it is lost forever.)

[personal profile] theabjectauthor 2013-05-23 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well ... I am unsure how many others may have already informed you of this, so if I am being unintentionally repetitive, I apologize ... but where I am from, the blind use their other senses to compensate for their lack of sight. It takes time and patience, but it is not entirely impossible.

Unfortunately, there's no proper resolution for it but time ... at least, there are no quick and easy solutions for it in my own homeland.
theabjectauthor: (I am in my cups - as it were.)

[personal profile] theabjectauthor 2013-06-02 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry I can't do much to assist you, Duke... I do wish you luck, however.

[he can only imagine how difficult it must be - the poor man has his sympathies]

What are you attempting?
thraxios: (the subway that only goes one way)

shit's difficult, son.

[personal profile] thraxios 2013-05-14 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
A difficult proposition. Do you have any magical ability?
thraxios: (you and i)

[personal profile] thraxios 2013-05-14 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Best not to rely on it.

What is it you're trying to hit?
thraxios: (and make everybody late)

[personal profile] thraxios 2013-05-15 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ah.

If you'll forgive an impertinent question, is your sight permanently gone?
thraxios: (dancing on a pot of gold flake paint)

You have my condolences; the castle's toll is a steep one.

Without the ability to rely on magic for a sort of 'second' sight, it seems that practice might be the only answer. Have you considered practicing against a person? I'd think the footsteps might make him easier to follow.
thraxios: (i just told the biggest lie)

[personal profile] thraxios 2013-05-15 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Practice swords? I would offer, but my place is generally among dusty old manuscripts these days.
thraxios: (you and i)

[Tragically, Gideon doesn't, either.]

Practice foils rarely leave more than a sting.

They're fairly durable, from what I recall - it should bend, rather than break.
