[ So perhaps he hadn't been on the Event Horizon, with all of its death and trauma, but Duke had been aware for to hear all that had gone on, to hear of what they needed to do.... And feel completely useless without his powers and with his loss.
Which is probably why the journal picks up the sounds of wood-on-wood, clacking motions like something is being struck repeatedly- then the whistle of air of a miss. Duke has made his way to that salle he was helping Vanyel build prior to that world change, and is.. well, attempting to work on swordskills. Only because he can't see- ]
Stop moving- [ That next sound of striking is a bit like flesh and wood, and Duke snarls, shaking out his arm and...
Well, a foul mood and magic don't go well with practicing without magic. This clatter of wood is the poor dummy shooting back from a hand that didn't even reach it, falling with a crash-
He is just going to stand there for a little bit, shaking his arm out. There's a faintly glowing line on the floor in a good 12 foot circle about where he and the dummy... were in the center. The circle didn't stop the dummy from going partially out, so it must be for something else... ]

[ Sound of feet and maybe a boot to wood. Duke is searching for that dummy... ]
... Yes, that would be the most thorough explanation.

[ Duke goes silent for a moment. ]
I could do that with magic, but that would also defeat the purpose.
[ If he stuck something to it with magic, it would let him know where it was... ]

[ He's grumpy and frustrated and forgot that he was talking to someone that - as far as he knows - has no magic. That sounded like he was implying things, to his own ears. ]
It is how I avoid walking into things, people. I use my magic. My aim may be poor, but I can still do things; heal, offensive casting, defensive casting, possibly physical offense and defense. Without it,... simply blind. Trying to fix that.

[ How does he word this- ]
The switch, from having a greater idea of what is around me, and a greater list of capabilities, to having a lesser idea, and being ill suited for much of anything is...
Distressing. Why attempting to make it better, but do not know of ways to work through this without relying on magic, which is perhaps source of problem.

Without the ability to rely on magic for a sort of 'second' sight, it seems that practice might be the only answer. Have you considered practicing against a person? I'd think the footsteps might make him easier to follow.
