[Well, York had been hoping that his usual routine would help keep his mind off things, but that was being an abysmal failure. Between South's open hostility and Carolina's complete lack of recognition for anything he'd done for her, he was rather upset. So maybe....

Maybe doing something a little different would help. And he'd promised that kid he'd help with building a holodeck, so there he is at the proposed site and going over several different possible designs for the projection system using a small portable holoprojector he's brought from his room. The room for the holodeck itself is just an empty cube with yellow lines in a grid along a black background. The door is open, so anyone who wants to bother a man playing with pretty lights can walk on in!]

[Blues had said he might take a look around York's room, so here he is. When he see's that the door is open, he doesn't bother knocking but his feet make a pretty distinct sound anyways. So it's not like he's sneaking in or anything.]

[York looks up and nods. Now here comes someone who might have some useful input.]

Hey. Come on in. You ever worked with holograms before?

[whistles_the_blues]

[He returns the nod, then tilts his head curiously.]

I'm going to guess you're working on that as well? I've never worked with holograms before, but I did some work in a robotics lab once upon a time.

[It was ages ago, even before he arrived here, but it was still something.]

I may be able to provide some assistance.

Yeah, there are a couple kids here who have something called a "holodeck" back home, basically a complete-immersion chamber used for entertainment. I've worked with something similar before, geared at training and battle simulation, but we don't have the people here who built it anymore.

[He flicks at the air and some complex schematics appear. It's very similar to Tony Stark's design since, well, Stark gave him a set a long time ago.]

So frankly I could use all the help I can get.

One of them told me about it when they were asking for people to help build it. I believe I can lend a hand. I'll admit I haven't personally seen anything like it, but I believe technology like it exists where I come from.

[It's what happens when you run away from the lab before you really get to see everything it has to offer.]

[ naomi had wanted to see how the holodeck was coming along. icheb had said she could help with it, but there's still not much she can actually do. it's way above her skill level. that doesn't mean she hasn't dropped by just to hand people equipment they might need as they ask for it.

so it is today that she's made her way over to see how things are coming and if she can help at all. she peers into the room to see if icheb or anyone else she knows is around. she's got her kadis-kot board to take to the library to play later. ]

[York waves at her from the corner where he's set up to work.]

Over here. Still going through a few designs.

[ she wanders closer, still holding her kadis-kot board. ] Do you need any help?

[ this may or may not be the look of a young girl who wants to prove herself useful. ]

Actually, yeah. I mean, I have a basic idea of how this works, but I'm going to need a lot of help from you guys who actually had something like this in full working condition.

[Luckily, power isn't an issue here, so he shouldn't have a problem installing as many projectors as they need.]

Mind if I ask you a few questions?

[It's honestly accidental when Carolina comes across York. She'd been going out of her way to avoid him since their most recent fight. Still, she'd gotten a chance to "rest" and recover at least some of her strength, enough to keep training at least. She'd been actively avoiding almost every member of her team since South's death and even taken up more unusual training hours to do so.

But she had slowly been getting faster, stronger. Despite this, every day she felt worse than the one before, more guilty, more fraught with the pain of not good enough. To try and get her mind off of it, she's gone exploring, seeking out the new corners of the Castle.

Which brings her to the holodeck at the exact moment she doesn't want to be there. She freezes in the doorway, watching him with a small hint of regret touching her expression.

If things hadn't gone to hell, she would probably have been in here helping him, not that she knows a whole ton about this kind of technology, but she would have at least been present for moral support of sorts.

Now everything was fucked up beyond belief and part of her still didn't want to fix things, refusing to admit that her loyalty in the Director could have been faulty.]

[Well. As much as York had been convincing himself he hadn't been intentionally avoiding Carolina, that was precisely what had occurred. His patrols hadn't gone by the gym when he knew she was likely to be there, but that was when he'd gone by her tower.

He said he'd never give up on her, and he hadn't, but there was only so much of her bullshit he could handle at a time. So when he looks up and sees her there, he looks down again and speaks in a neutral tone.]

What do you want?

Nothing. I was looking around. [Enough had changed between everything else that had shaken the Castle since her disappearance and between her arrival and now. And yet, still more had changed. As a Church, she solidly hated change in almost every form. She is, at least, making some small effort to manage that in some areas.

Besides that, she does make a show of glancing around the room before directing her gaze back to him. Welp, looks like she's seen everything here that she's meant to see.]

What are you working on. [Her questions still don't trail up, every one of them sounding like a quiet demand.]

[York sighs and shuts down the holographic projection of the plans for the moment.]

Helping some of the kids here build something from their home. A holographic projection chamber for entertainment.

[As opposed to the Danger Room, which is a holographic projection chamber for training (that had been damaged in the earthquake).]

[Kelly feels like she's losing her mind with the boredom. The time on the ship was appreciated for the rush of adrenaline it offered, but the days since have been increasingly worrisome for her.]

[On another pointless patrol of the castle, she finds York, and looks in curiously.]

So, what's this going to be?

[He waves to her in an inviting gesture.]

"Holodeck" - a holographic simulation chamber for entertainment purposes. Some kids have one at home and missed it, so I said I'd help make one here. Gives me something to do, you know?

[She steps in at his invite, circling his holo table and in general taking in what work he's done so far.]

Is tech your specialization?

[York blows it up a little so she can see detail.]

Nah. Infiltration. But we don't exactly have anyone here who's a real tech specialist, so I get to work on it anyway.

[hard_talker]

[Mark wanders in, nose already buried in one of the PADDs that Icheb copied for him, the rest in the backpack slung over his shoulder. he squints at the screen and pushes his glasses up on his nose, thoroughly absorbed in the contents]

-- but that kind of circuitry shouldn't even be physically possible...!

[York chuckles and scales down the display a little.]

Oh, it's possible, all right. Little more intense than anything this castle's seen in its rooms before, though.

Oh, geez! Hey, York. [thankfully he recovers well from the sort of heart attacks that come from being too involved with reading material. he shoots him a sheepish grin]. I shoulda figured this would be up your alley.

Afternoon.

[And York nods.]

It's not exactly the same kind of tech we have at home? But close enough, really. Too bad we don't have a couple of robots with power tools. This could all be done in a jiffy.

[Perhaps someday Galadriel will stop being awed by the things people here do with technology. But it will be a long time before that day ever comes.

She hangs back in the doorway for a moment, watching the lights with a sort of wonder rarely seen on her face. It really is marvelous. Eventually, she will speak up, though, announcing her presence.]

[York looks up. Now there's a voice he wasn't expecting to hear today. He blinks a couple times under his visor and makes a gesture, causing the hologram he's working on to shrink down to a tiny level.]

Pleasure to see you here, ma'am. Don't tell me you're working on the Holodeck, too?

[Somehow he doesn't think so, but it's worth asking.]

[She laughs at that. It was sweet to ask, but this is so far beyond her, it's not even funny.]

I know nothing of it, alas. I was simply passing by and found myself intrigued.

Oh, you'll definitely have to check back when it's done - bet you've never seen anything like it before. Course, it'll probably be like a month or two, if we get lucky working out all the bugs.

[Unless someone who's good at this kind of thing actually shows up, cough Tony Stark cough. But for now, well, York's had experience using this sort of thing before. That's better than no help at all, right?

He hopes so, anyway.]
