paradisa | fondue for two; episode one

[sometime early in the evening one brittany s. pierce steps out of the door of mckinley high on her final day as a junior and...finds herself on the front steps of a much different building. totally not where she's supposed to be. she goes back through the door and finds herself in an odd lobby that is definitely not her high school.

she steps back outside and looks around. a castle? really?? hmmm. maybe she's having an awesome dream again. she sits on the steps and pulls her backpack down to open it up. last time she had a dream like this it was filled with gummy bears! sadly, this time it isn't. but there is an unfamiliar book inside. she takes it out and looks it over, and after a bit she pulls out a crayon to write in it. it seems lots of other words are in it so...why not?

she writes:]

Dear Diary,

I don't know if this is a-

[there's a gasp and huff and she speaks]

Hey! My crayon! It-

[and a more frustrated huff]

What? Stop! Stop recording what I'm saying! Stupid spy diary! You can't do that, I'm an American and I have rights! You can't-...okay, Lord Tubbington did you drug my water again? This isn't funny!!

Lord.... Tubbington? Who's that, your rubber duckie?

Lord Tubbington? Don't know who that is, sorry. The journal does that, though. We can write in it, sure, but it also picks up on everything we say to it, and writes it down for us. No drugs, just a little bit of magic.

Unfortunately, this journal you have is a strange one. We all have them here.

I'm American too -- I wish that claiming the fourth amendment would get the journal to stop, and for us to be back home.

And Lord Tubbington isn't a rubber duckie, he's my cat. Rubber duckies can't drug you.

[that last part with a 'jeez don't you know anything'? kind of tone]

He's my cat, and I know he's always been out to get me.

It's...it's a pen. It was a crayon and now it's a pen! See?

[she scrawls her name across the paper with her pen and IT'S NOT THE RED CRAYON SHE WANTED TO USE.]

But where am I?

Well I have to go home anyway, I have things to do.

Heh, yeah. Cats can be pretty evil, when they're not out killing mice.

Yup. Like wizards and witches and stuff, not David Blaine. There's actually a couple of real witches and wizards here in the castle, too.

Hi Sophie, do you know where I am?

Okay but...why am I in a castle with magic and wizards and creepy diaries?

No. Are you inside or outside?

I'm outside.

Maybe you're in the garden or by the lake. If you see ducks you're by the lake.

I'm sitting outside the castle. I know that part of where am I, but... where am-

Yes. There are always ducks in the pond except when it's cold.

No one knows, really. There hasn't been anyone stepping forward to tell us why we're here or anything. We just sorta get dropped here, and and to figure things out for ourselves. Nice thing is that we're not alone, you know?

The castle has henceforth taken away all your rights. Sorry about that.

I'm talking to you because ... [ahem. puts on his most authoritative tone] I've been listening to you for years, now. And I've decided it's time I taught you how to live.

... as for the cat, well. You never specified. I've been kind of running on assumptions for a little while now.

Oh! [Sugar's not quite sure the difference between pens and crayons, but that is definitely a different kind of line!]

[There's a small snort of laugher from the other side of the lobby, where this girl is leaving the kitchen with big claw slippers on her feet and an ice cream sundae in her hands. She give Brittany an amused side-glance.]

Yes, you've been drugged. It's aaaaall a hallucination. Any minute now you're gonna turn into a duck, so watch out.

I'm told it's a place called Paradisa. I'm still working out the details, myself.

Apparently, what brought us here is magic or something of the sort, but I'm looking for a better explanation. No luck so far.
