Team Tembo: Day one

[By now you should have already woken up to your surroundings. Your camp is in the jungle, surrounded by tents, vehicles and cages full of dinosaurs. Wander around, check out the armoury, wonder why there are a bunch of dinosaurs in cages, or get yourself a tent]

Isn't it just? [He looks about as amused by these development as she is, although he's used to being without his magic by now. He knows more or less upon waking that it's simply not there and makes no effort to force the issue. Unlike some people, apparently.

Also his sleepwear looks suspicious like a nightgown, enjoy that.]

[Alex is just too stubborn to accept it like that. She's in a jungle, with dinosaurs, and an armory - her brain can do the math. Not having magic is making her feel entirely too exposed here, and she's not thrilled about the thought of getting eaten.

She looks up at Felix, and her mouth twists into a smirk.]

[It's not so much that he accepts it as is much better at living in denial. In that regard, she's doing much better]

[She finally stands up and makes a move to tuck her wand in her boot, before remembering she has neither of those things.]

You'd think they could let us keep, like, a little. Not enough to fight dinosaurs, but enough to conjure up some shoes, or something.

[He at least can sympathize with her there.]

Magic cannot fix all your problems. Be that as it may, I'm sure there is something around for us...[He eyes the camp. Hopefully]

Yeah? You sound like my parents. Always trying to teach me real world stuff for when I lose my magic.

[She stands back up and looks over her shoulder at the camp, a bit warily.]

Probably should've listened.

It wouldn't hurt to learn. I admit I feel a bit bereft now and again, after having it for half my life. Though it's less magic to blame for lack of self-sufficiency and more having the kind of money that meant I did not tend to worry about trivialities.

I'm probably gonna lose my magic when I'm older anyway. Guess I should figure out stuff like cooking and laundry without a wand, but who has the time for that?

[She does raise one eyebrow at him after a moment.]

Wait, half your life? So, you weren't born with it?

Wizards from my world don't manifest their magic until they older. Somewhere from early teens to young adult, depending. It's different for everyone.

We don't get ours till around middle school. Maybe a little earlier. It's the worst, you can't control anything right off the bat. My brothers and I all had to wear this stupid hat to school so we didn't give ourselves away by accident.

Hm. It's less possible for us to do anything spontaneous with our magic, but without training young wizards are bound to try and have a high chance of doing something unfortunate. But all they need to do is seek out a mentor or apprenticeship.

What...does the hat do, exactly?

Kinda like a teacher, you mean?

I don't know, it just kind of... cancels out magic, I guess. One time a spell kind of went wrong on me, made my head look all inflated - never drink two halves of a love potion, by the way. But I had to wear the hat until it wore off.

I'll remember that next time I'm trying to bespell somebody. The last thing I need is an unfortunate hat.

Yeah, this is a hat you really want to avoid. It looks like a Christmas ornament. When my powers were coming in I had to wear really tacky clothes to distract everyone from the thing.
