[Dairine laughs.] I'm not sure how much of it is my story to tell ― I got there a bit late, but here it goes:
New York City is home to one of the largest worldgating facilities on Earth ― worldgates being natural rips in the fabric of reality, leading to parallel worlds or other places. Wizards use them to move long distances fast. We also have teams devoted to maintaining them and regulating their usage.
Well, about a year before I got here, there was a severe disturbance with the worldgates. Something was trying to force its way through. A lot of somethings. The maintenance crew did their best to hold it back, but eventually the worldgates burst open, and a whole swarm of dinosaurs stormed Grand Central Station! It was an army, armed to the teeth, quite literally. We fought them off long enough to close the worldgates, but one had been rigged so when the wizards tried to deactivate it, the portal moved to Central Park instead. In the middle of a packed opera concert.
