Fiftieth Spell

This is not the first time that the castle has not only taken us to a different place, but a different time as well. Some time ago, the castle took the residents to two different towns. I wasn't here for that, but I read about it. That was the Old West, a time in the United States of America that became well-known because of the cowboys.

I grew up in the 1980s. It was odd being back in that time. It makes me wonder why the castle picked it, out of all the times in the history of Earth.

Did anything weird or otherwise noteworthy happen to people back then? I mean, other than the whole time travel thing.

They met two people, and one turned out to be from the First Generation. She was a woman named Reno Browne.

What did she do when they met them? Did she try to convince them of anything or give a warning?

No, I don't think so. There was a shoot-out near the end of our stay, I believe. But she just rode away. We didn't know she was a First Generation until later. The same is true for John Hammond, the man responsible for Jurassic Park.

I read the report that Lois Lane wrote on the First Gens and what this world used to be like before we arrived. I wonder if these events are caused by the castle sucking up large quantities of energy from us, they use some of that to create an alternative reality, and then while we are gone, they use the rest of the energy to change the world we're currently in? Maybe the First Gens are in charge of creating the alternative realities we are sent to, and they are rewarded with having parts of the world changed to whatever they want.

I haven't thought of it that way, but it's possible. So many of htese places on the map are the same as places we visited during the "world changes", and we can't ignore the alternate memories people have been getting when they come back remembering Paradisa.

I wish the First Gens would work with us and not against us. It would make our lives a whole lot simpler, but where's the fun in that, huh?

Some of them do work with us. Flora from Mineas Well gave us those crystals, and some are even willing to answer questions.

I guess a better way of putting it is I wish more of them did. If we all came together, then we'd get a lot more accomplished. Instead, it's a safe bet we're going to have to deal with more craziness in the near future.

Erm, well... it's quite different, I imagine. What year are you from?

So you've yet to really see things like automobiles, then. They're horseless carriages that run on gasoline and can travel very fast and far. It's the most common form of travel in my time.

There is a car in our garage at the castle, if you'd like to see one in person.

Horseless carriage? What's gasoline? How does that work?

Cowboys? As in Stetson wearing riding horses cowboys?

That is the most well-known image of a cowboy. You usually knew the hero by his white hat.

I think it's more that the color white is often associated with purity and goodness.

Well, white is usually clean and pure. Just think of snow as an example. White is also associated with light. In the days before color television, everything was in monotone colors, so white was more noticeable and an obvious choice for the heroic characters.

Except things aren't ever black and white, there's all those little shades of grey you gotta watch out for.

Yes, I know that, Once-ler. But visually people perceive white and black that way.
