Are there rules to this game?

When you're going in for the kill, so to speak, you can't say the word you're trying to get them to say, and you have to be there to witness them saying the word, but beyond that, anything goes.

Do you tell them that they've been "killed"?

[alias_savant]

Yeah. To their face after they say the word, usually with fanfare.
