[Reports from Winchester - Day 2]

[Katniss is standing at the edge of town, far enough not to be overheard by the inhabitants, and it's clear in the writing that she's a little ...perturbed.]

We've reached the town. Most of the residents are hiding from us - so I suppose they're wondering the same thing I am, 'what kind of trap is this?' Some of the buildings have appeared to have been attacked - it looks consistent to the bug attacks from Terre Haute.

[She sighed, before looking out to the farmlands.] We met Dr. Gene Brewer, along with some ... kid named Heath. They seem friendly enough, and Dr. Brewer is the leader. Apparently they've lost two people - a housewife and a film student - so random attacks.

[A shake of her head.] It seems too simple ... but maybe I'm just jumping at shadows again.

Bond's a shadow. You're one, too. Shadows are the things you should watch for, most of all. Trust your instincts, Katniss.

What else have you seen?

[She nodded her head slowly, before she spoke to the journal.] Dr. Brewer said they came from one of the other castles. From what I can tell, they're a lot smaller than us.

So they're still alive. Good. Glad to know that it's not a complete disaster. What condition is the town in?

They're alive -- but they're scared and mistrustful of us. The town ... has seen better days.

I wouldn't worry too much about mistrust, if they're nomads, that's likely their default condition. What's everyone else doing, at the moment?

As you say, M. [She looked around.] Repairs, rebuilding. I'm going to take some of the survivors out and give them weapon training and show them where the good sight lines are here on the ground, so they can defend themselves better.

Good. Sounds like you've got it all well enough in hand without my two pence, at any rate.

[her voice catches in her throat, and she coughs, quietly. it's the most talking she's done in the last few days, and it doesn't take her long to feel hoarse]

[Chell wanders up beside Katniss.]

I don't like the looks of this. At all.

[She looked over at Chell, nodding her head once.]

Neither do I. Pass the word around - let Tsuna know if you see him - I'm calling for double watches tonight.

I will. I'll even volunteer for one of those watches.

[One corner of her mouth lifted.]

I figured you might.

[She looks around again, before meeting Chell's gaze.] What do you think is happening here?

[Chell's eyes flick around the town in front of them.]

I think... I think people are scared for their lives, and fear breeds distrust of anyone they don't know. But I'm also not sure these bug things aren't just waiting for us, waiting for us to come in and try to help before they pounce and try to kill us too. I don't know a lot about military tactics. But that would seem the sensible thing. Get your enemy cornered in one spot and attack them that way.

[Then her eyes flicked toward Katnis.]

What do you think?

[She nodded her head briefly in agreement, before she pressed her mouth together.]

I do have military training - and I think the best way to take out your enemy is to split them off from their supplies. And I think they have us all, exactly where they want us. All of us.

[Chell nods. She very much doesn't like the sound of that, and the frown she's wearing tells that much.]

do you know of anything else we can do beyond double watches?

Keep our eyes open. Look for clues, anything that would tell us what we're getting into.

[Chell nods.]

That is a very good idea.

Most importantly though - you see anything weird? Don't keep it to yourself. Tell me, tell someone else. Spread it around, though. So we all know to be wary.

[Chell nods.]

This I can do.

[She's had sharp eyes after all the years in Aperture. It seems they will serve her well.]

[She nods in turn, before looking back to the town.]

And keep an eye on the Doctor.

You got it.

[Chell slinks off to do what she's been asked.]

Maybe... but just so you know, if shit goes bad I have back up waiting to help you.

Or at least cover your retreat.

Just make sure to get the kids and the healers out first.

Just make sure to get them over the border into the powered zone. I'm not much help on the other side.

[Stupid Dead Zone]

I promise, I'll get them over the border as quick I can.

[Even if she's shooting every step of the way.]

What did you think of the doctor and Heath?

Heath seems harmless. The Doctor ... I don't know. I think he legitimately wants to help his people. But I also think he knows more than he's letting on.

Probably. Seems like most of those from places other than Paradisa are wary of us, if not aggressive. I'm starting to think I should've come along.

[but then, he's really not sure what the Dead Zone would do to him]

And I'm even more certain you should stay where you're at.

[her voice is tart, but warm with concern.] I don't want you turning to a piece of firewood, brother.

That stays between us, okay?

To the grave.

[She would sooner go to prison.]

Let's not get carried away.

Well not MY grave. Once you die, I'm telling everyone I know.

And how does that work if I'm technically already dead?

I would assume that if you're already dead, we really shouldn't be having this conversation.

Magic brought me back. You really want me to explain how it works?

... You know I stopped questioning 'magic' last month.
