Comfort Food

[Finding his way to the dining hall, Rodney sits himself down at a random chair at the largest empty table he can find. For a minute he just sits there tapping his fingers on the table... thinking.

He's not tried this wishing thing yet. He's not really he's fully sure how it works, but if the Castle has already taken payment from him he's damn sure he's not going to waste it. And, he's a scientist after all. What good would he be if he didn't experiment.

With that he clears his throat and begins...]

I wish for ice cream sundae, make it caramel, no hot fudge and whip cream and a cherry. Or better yet, make the ice cream pistachio, hmmm or maybe Neapolitan would be better.

Better yet, a banana split with a scoop of vanilla, chocolate, and ... not strawberry, um... how about chocolate chip?

Oh, now you know what would be good, chocolate chip cookie dough! It's been like forever since...

[Suddenly the table began filling with the different ice cream treats that Rodney mentioned and some he only had thought about but hadn't yet said.]

Uh, oops?! I think I may have gone a bit overboard. If anyone cares for some ice cream...

A bit of both actually... But I think this time I may have wished more than I can eat.

Pistachio?

Gesundheit. [A pause, and a quick smile as he enters the dining hall further instead of leaning at the door.] That's kind of you, thank you, but I shall pass.

I think you've wished for more than what half of the castle can eat. Purely by accident, so it seems.

I'm sure that kind of thing happens. Run away wishes and all that.

Was much easier than I expected to be honest. In my experience, that's not a good thing.

You're quite right. One should always be careful what they wish for.

[Waving a finger at his ear and then holding out his hand for a shake,] I recognise your voice, I think. Dr. McKay, wasn't it?

[Rodney takes a bite of ice cream and nods.] So true!

Mmm, yes, that's me. And you... you are... [Snaps his fingers a couple of time trying to remember.] I'm terrible with names. The guy who wanted me to use honey instead of vinegar!

[His eyebrows go up and he tilts his head to the side.] Really? Most find it memorable. The Doctor, and I'm glad to see you've taken my advice.

[Indicating the spread on the table next,] I think some of the children especially may appreciate the gesture.

[Rodney snaps his fingers again.] Yes that was it! I knew it was some form of title!

[Frowning he looks over the table, this so does not translate into honey!] Wait?! Did you say children? There are children in the Castle?!

[Mildly,] Considering you claim to have the same I think I'm insulted that you'd forget.

Ahh... [Now this makes for an interesting point. Pulling out a chair he sits opposite, forearms on the table and casually looking over the piles of ice cream and finding himself tempted.] I thought you would know by now. Although, some of the children did sneak away on the expedition. And given recent events... [He pulls a face like he has a sour taste in his mouth at those recent events.]

The youngest child that I know of is approximately seven. Up until a few months ago there was a child here of around two years of age. The castle is quite indiscriminate.

[Rodney shrugs and waves it off.] Don't be insulted or take it personally. I forget everyone's name. Genius in science, terrible with the softer skills.

[Rodney frowns. He thinks he's missed something important but then he doesn't want to know. Really doesn't want to know. The look on the Doctor's face makes it clear that he does.not.want.to.know! Too late, curiousity is peaked.] What recent events?

Two? Seven?! Are you kidding me?! What the hell is are kids that age doing here? Let me guess, they're here on their own too. No parents to look after them so they are left to bother everyone else?!

No actual offence taken. [Given their previous conversation he did wonder about the lack of 'softer skills'.]

I never 'kid' about children. And trust me, their being here is as much of an annoyance to them as it is to you.

[Narrowing his eyes at Rodney,] This last week and just over. Those recent events.

Humph! I highly doubt that!

[Rodney thinks over the last week. It was quiet and he was able to get work on finding a way to recharge the tablet he brought with him. Had something else happened?]

It was really quiet in the castle for a change... Is that what you are referring too?

[He can't help it. He will just look at Rodney with that narrow-eyed gaze for a moment. The reason he doesn't know could be down to a number of things, all castle induced, the Doctor knows that fact well enough.]

...Yes. I'm sorry, Dr. McKay, there is no easy way to say it. There was an incident last week. Four people died, during.

Four people?! What the hell happened?

I'm sorry. Of what I've been told and read, we were visited by the Gentleman. No, I don't know what they are either, but everyone's voice was taken and they also took lives. [He shakes his head a little, still disgusted by the thought.] Death isn't permanent, here.

Oh! That's why the journals were so quiet! Thought I'd found the off switch...

... How does that work?!

[With an over show of patience he crosses his arms. Only to stop himself from wiping a hand down his face at the remark about the off switch.]

Two weeks, usually, and people revive. We could get into another science versus magic debate, but on this, I'd rather not.

Huh, so like a built in sarcophagus only with a longer rejuvenating period.

[Rodney thinks about that a moment and then nods with a shrug. Good to know if he ends up dying but he'd rather avoid that if at all possible. With his luck he'll end up addicted to the damn thing. Now wouldn't that be fun?!

He looks at the Doctor and shakes his head.] No magic involved, it's complete science. I wonder if naquada is indigenous to this planet or if it was brought here... Possibly by the Go'uld or Ancients... Or someone like them.

Pardon me? Rejuvenating period? When I've come across a sarcophagus that isn't one it's been a time-space tunnel.

Naquadah? [He's definitely interested and has a ton of questions. Well done Rodney.] A type of oil? [Sounds along the lines of napalm, hence, petroleum.] I think you still may be clutching at straws for a while I'm afraid.

Time-space tunnel in a sarcophagus? Well that sounds awfully cramped! No, no, it's a healing thing. Can bring you back from the dead even. The Goa'uld use it quite regularly to fix their bodies or to torture the rest of us. Not saying that we've not used it from time to time for our own advantage but it's not like we have on on Atlantis!

I'm not grasping at straws, thank you! Frankly this seems all beyond you. No wonder you're so quick to resort to a fantastical cause.

Fantastical? [He crosses his arms and makes a pointed look across the table at the wished for ice-cream.] Careful, Dr. McKay. Occam's Razor might cut something.

[It's obvious that Rodney thinks he knows nothing. Not the first time that has happened and the Doctor is happy to let Rodney keep that assumption, although his voice does have a tone to it, a hint of insincerity.] Atlantis, is that a ship? And a mineral to have energy do all sorts of things, well that does sound interesting.

[Far more serious for the next.] The Goa'uld. Enemy of yours?

Ever hear of a teleporter? Again, still not magic!

[If the Doctor detects annoyance in Rodney's voice he'd be right. As he hears the insincerity in the Doctor's voice he snorts and shakes his head.]

More of a flying city than a ship but yes basically the same thing. And, it's a mineral that super charges energy. The mineral itself is not an energy source.

[Rodney waves his hand] The Goa'uld and the Wraith it just depends on which galaxy you're in. There are others but they're the major players.

What about Doctor? Do you have enemies out there?

[He shakes his head. Leading horse to water, rinse and repeat, McKay will either open his mind a little on his own, or not.]

A teleporter, the whole castle? And a - what was it - rejuvenating sarcophagus? All in one? If a teleporter - I call them transmats, by the way - is sending the ice-cream, who puts it in at the other end?

I have one or two enemies, I suppose, yes. [Or hundreds, who's counting.] Devil's advocate may be one of them.

Just because I don't have all the answers doesn't mean there isn't a completely logical and scientific answer.

Yes, and I can fully understand why!

Yes. Precisely what I have been getting at. But at the same time, any good scientist has to open their mind to other possibilities; that's how the great discoveries are made. Not only that, there is still perception. A piece of technology from the 30th Century is complete magic - or devilry - to someone in the 13th.

[Rodney does get a rather flat look for a moment. Before the Doctor breaks into a wide grin. Thank you. I do try.
