[Bruce is hiding in the clinic/his lab. He tends to do that, when he is stressed. Between the Gentlemen and the castle's recent tantrums, Bruce wants to just wrap himself in the nice, safe, sensible world of science and research. Of course, being in the clinic means seeing patients, too, but Bruce doesn't mind. Being helpful is one of his coping mechanisms.]

[Mal walks into the clinic, intending to help out with patients, but the clinic isn't really all that busy. He approaches Dr. Banner, easy smile on his face.]

How's business today, Doc?

[ Did someone say science and research? Also band-aids. No one said band-aids, but that's primarily what Newt is looking for when he finds his way to the clinic and pokes his bloody, dirty head inside. ]

Hello? Anyone in here?

[Tess enters the clinic with a touch of wariness. As much as she wants her shoulder looked at and to follow-up on her own recovery, she isn't terribly fond of doctors and even less fond of being vulnerable in a strange place. (As if Tess ever enjoyed being vulnerable at all, that is.) She's armed, naturally, but today she doesn't figure she'll need it. She probably hadn't needed it last time, after all.

She has no idea who Dr. Banner is or what they look like, but she's sure she can figure it out. She wanders to the back to poke her head into the offices to see who is about, and, spying Bruce, she stops by the door. She hopes he doesn't comment on how skinny and bruised and scarred up she is and can just focus on her damn shoulder.

Tess asks:]

Know where I can find Dr. Banner?

[Tess hopes Jennifer didn't warn him, but hey, she can work with it regardless.]

[Bruce smiles back, looking up from his instruments. He's keeping busy between patients with the shard of crystal Alvin gave him.] Slow, fortunately. The castle seems to be taking it easy on us for a bit.

Yes, may I help you? [Bruce looks up and frowns in concern.] Please, come in and sit down. What happened?

[Bruce looks up from his research and smiles. He knows nothing about this woman and is bit surprised that she knows his name. But, he supposes word of a new doctor is something that would be talked about.]

I'm Dr. Banner. How can I help you?

[There's her man. Tess smiles, if only to be polite, but it doesn't go far to mask how wary she feels.]

About a month and a half ago I had another doctor here take a hunk out of my shoulder because of a nasty infection. She recommended seeing you about ensuring that it's healing right.

[Mal rubbed his hands together, taking a look around the lab.]

Well, I hadda mind to come help out a bit, if you don't mind. Something to do, even if it's not too busy around here.

Oh -- I'm--I'm totally fine, I'm just scavenging for antiseptic, and I thought hey, the clinic would be... sensible. Uuuuuh -- got anything I can swipe?

I don't mind at all. Honestly, if you can help with the few patients we do get, I'd be grateful. This crystal is fascinating.

Sure, come on in and sit down. [He waves a hand towards a chair.] Um, what's your name?

Of course. [Bruce goes to a cabinet and pulls out antiseptic, some clean towels, and some bandages, bringing them over.] Are you sure you don't want some help? It's what we're here for.

[She pauses, but now that she knows most people have never heard of a kind that exists in humans, it's easier to be honest. Educated people might know it from ants.]

Dear God. How did that happen? I thought the castle wanted us alive, at least mostly.

[Tess is almost surprised; when has she ever gotten sympathy and no barrage of questions?]

It does want us alive. Once bitten, most people only have a day or two until it takes over completely... I'd only been bitten an hour before I got to Paradisa, and when it didn't change after twelve hours, I freaked and had Dr. Keller take a knife to the bite.

[A pause.]

Emphasis on freaked, which is why she doesn't want to look at it again.

Hm. I guess I shouldn't have assumed you received the infection here. [He examines her shoulder, frowning at her comment about Dr. Keller.] It's not very professional to refuse to treat a patient, no matter how badly they reacted.

How does it feel? Are you experiencing any pain or loss of mobility in the arm?

Um. I wasn't given a name for it. A young man named Alvin gave it to me. It's one of the crystals that lets people use equipment in the Dead Zone.

[Tess pulls off her jacket and pushes down the strap of her tank top; the bandaging on it is thick, enough to encompass almost her entire shoulder, and she starts peeling at the dressings. This gross-ass picture is kind of what it looks like. Except, you know, on her shoulder.]

It hurts like fuck. It hurts to use my shoulder, obviously, can't move the damn thing without pain... just been drinking a lot to dull it. I know you're not supposed to tell doctors that shit, but I'm just not in the habit of using other painkillers.

[Bruce examines the wound, any urge to wince carefully controlled.]

Actually, that's exactly the sort of thing you need to tell your dcotor. If I know you're going to keep drinking, no matter what painkiller I give you, then I know what to avoid. Do you have any allergies?

[Tess almost expects a wince. The thing looks ugly as hell, and the leftover dead skin doesn't help. She's more focused on keeping calm, though, not wanting to cringe when he gets too close.]

None that I'm aware of, drug-wise.
