[The music is in her mind, but her feet move as if they've known the steps all along as she dances in front of the castle. She skips and spins in time, her skirt twirling around her legs. When she stops, she's breathless.]

Was a girl once. Loved to dance.

[She extends her leg and points her toe as much as she can in combat boots, then slowly brings in feet together.]

A woman now, but the same love.

[The Doctor is walking in the courtyard when he comes upon her dancing. He stops to watch her and finds joy in her movements and her happiness.]

Oh that's brilliant! Did you dance professionally before coming here?

[River tilts her head, taking in his smile. She gives him one to match.]

Never had a chance. Would have been fun, though.

And you would have been very good at it. Could have made a career I imagine.

[She bows dramatically.

Why yes, thank you, I would love to dance!

[Extends his hand.]

[She takes his hand and bows again, then puts her other hand on his shoulder.]

I don't know if you're aware, but I thought I'd mention given that your post sets your character in the castle: We have been running a Florence plot this past week, meaning the characters are currently in Renaissance Florence, not the usual castle setting. [And with that, several minutes later Simon is headed down the stairs toward his sister, smiling widely when he spots her. He was glad to be back in Paradisa, as much as he disliked the place sometimes, and, well- River was happy. What more did he need?]

[She takes his hand and holds it above her head, making him spin her.]

Happy here. It's quiet, and you're here. Meets all my needs.

[Mal happens upon her on his way to the city. He stands watching for a while before he approaches, marveling at how free she seems here.]

[She'd noticed him watching, but pretends she hadn't. She gives him a smile as she twirls around him.]

[He turns to watch her as she twirls, then nods.]

Well, that is surely a good thing to hear, little one. Long past time you found some peace in life, that's a fact.

[She gives him a firm nod, agreeing completely. Then she offers her hand to him.]

A dance, Captain?

[He shakes his head, but takes her hand so his refusal doesn't seem like a rejection. He pats her hand, then lets go.]

You know I don't dance, darlin'.

Do so. Danced with Inara at that ball. Knew the steps and everything.

[Jennifer was coming back from walking Blue when she spotted a familiar figure- dancing as though it were the most natural thing in the world for her. She watched for a few moments, wondering with some nervousness whether to approach the girl before Blue answered for her, the sheepdog tugging insistently on his leash and pulling her toward River.

Jennifer sighed and followed his lead, putting on a shy smile. It was always awkward for her to meet people who'd known Kaylee- moreso people who had actually come from the same world as her- even if she had been very fond of River.]

Hello, River. You dance beautifully.

[She grips her skirt and drops into a curtsy.]

Should dance with me. Makes you smile more.

[River drops to her knees and scratches Blue behind the ears.]

Is he yours?

[She smiles more sweetly at the curtsey, then shakes her head.]

I'm not very graceful, I'm afraid. I'd probably end up making a fool of myself.

[She nods.]

A friend of mine left him to me when he vanished from here. His name's Blue. [Blue wags his tail, then comes up to River, mouth open and tongue lolling.] He's a big old softy, but he's been a good companion.

Dance for yourself, don't worry about others.

[She sits on the ground and hugs Blue, rubbing her nose against his.]

He has a good soul, sweet and loyal.

[Blue whuffles happily at the attention, giving River a small doggie kiss in reply.]

He does at that. He's my guard dog over at the clinic, though I think he does it for the belly rubs.

[She then shakes her head a little.]

I think I'll leave the dancing to the expert, really. You have a lot of talent for it. I'd feel like a clumsy hippo next to you.

[She laughs and the kiss and gives Blue one in return.]

Then by yourself, alone in your room. Dancing makes you free.
