35 | Johann Memory [ Dictated / Action ]
... It was some time ago that it was most recently brought up, thus if no one remembers I would not be terribly surprised.
[ Way to start off trying to get everyone's attention, Duke. He manages to realize this, and sigh a little. ]
There were plans, some time ago, to plan the teaching of various physical styles of combat. I offered, but events that followed seemed to remove such plans from memory. I am most proficient with swords, specifically those commonly classified as one, or one-and-a-half handed. I know how not to injure myself with a few other weapons, should those be more interesting. Halberd or spear, mace, axe, staff.
[ A pause, and then he's faintly amused as he adds: ]
Any ranged weapons are better asked for aid from someone else, beyond grip and stances. .. There is a building outside, and that is where I will be, if anyone is very interested.
[ Filtered to Vanyel and Tylendel ]
... A month or three ago, I mentioned to Tylendel that I knew a spell for flight. If you are interested, I will be outside.

dictated;
Must be frustrating.

Plans being forgotten, ill suited at ranged combat? There are a few things that are often frustrating.
dictated;
If it makes you feel better, chances are they might forget everything they learned by the time they need it.
dictated;
True enough. Hopefully if they stick with it long enough, whether they remember won't matter because the muscles might.

Maybe this guy was good enough for his fake daughter.]
You do a lot of teaching?
dictated;
[ He's actually rather terrible at that whole giving information thing, usually. He's just been working on it while living here. ]
I remember enough of going through the learning process to hopefully reverse it.
dictated;
I was never much of a teacher either.
dictated;
... Sounds like you tried.
dictated;
Not really. I just had a free afternoon one day.
dictated;
[ That tone is sort of hesitantly disbelieving. Duke isn't sure whether that was an attempt to stop the topic and false, or true. It sounded a little like both to him. ]
Not something would wish to repeat, assuming.
dictated;
I think you'd have more luck.
dictated;
Aside from ranged, possible.
dictated;
Getting more confident all the time.
dictated;
... I am thinking that the worst case would be needing to heal someone. If it goes poorly before that, easier to call off.
dictated;
dictated;
It would probably be something both easier and harder. Yes, I would.
dictated;
Mmm. Well, I have learned a few basics from Ashura in the past, but admittedly we did not get far with it.

[He was at a serious disadvantage when he encountered the Collectors in the Dead Zone last year, and his lack of skill put his brother at risk.]
dictated;
[ There's a reason he hasn't left the castle on a Dead Zone trip, no matter how curious he got. ]
Grip and stance are good basics to start with. For defense... we can figure something that works well for you. I would not assume that my method of avoidance and injuring as a defense would work for everyone.

Aside from settling the newest animal, I do very little that I could not do at some other time. When do you find some physical exercise convenient?
dictated;
I'll be down shortly.
dictated; -> action?
... True enough.
[ A good thing he was a magic swordsman. ]
I'll be there.
[ And not in his coats for once, although those are off to the side. ]
action forever
It takes him a little while to find the place, but thankfully a solitary structure on the grounds isn't too hard to lose track of, but eventually he wanders in, looking somewhat unsure - not that Duke can tell, thankfully for him.]

Duke half turns when he hears footsteps, checking with magic. ]
I don't know what you meant, exactly, by short sword. These ones seem short to me, without being... knives.
[ He has a collection of blunt wooden swords on a bench. ]
no subject
I have no idea. It is short, and it is a sword. The blade would be about the size of my forearm, I suppose? Perhaps a little smaller...
no subject
Pick something you like, then. Hold it as you remember, stand as you remember, see what you think is the best fit.
no subject
Does this suffice?
no subject
[ The comment may not make that much sense, but if Felix thinks really hard he might remember that Duke, when they had first met, had been feeling ill due to his own magic.
He's using that to see at the moment, which he tilts his head. ]
... Would it be awkward if I tried to unbalance you? Balance is fairly important, and its hard to... find that, using magic.
[ ... Aka, would it be awkward if he tried to shove Felix over to see if that stance works for him- ]
no subject
If you believe that is the best way to teach it, then do as you need to.
[Though he is not at all eager for it]
no subject
Starting to think that maybe it wasn't quite as good of an idea as I had thought.
[ He only reaches out to Felix's shoulder to try rocking him, though. Nudges like he is blocking and the shock of that going down his arm. ]
You were interested in defense. If someone can push you over as you block, then the stance isn't good for you at all. ... Also assumes you are willing to stay put and deflect or plainly block things...
.. Which would you prefer? Blocking at least will be taught, but.. do you think you would be best being what could not be hit? Being able to stay put and deflect everything? Killing them before they hit you?
[ Duke is guessing a mix of the first two, honestly. ]
no subject
I'd like to avoid...killing...unless necessary.
no subject
... Try planting your feet a little further apart.
[ He's silent for a moment. ]
Avoiding prevents damage from impacts, but also causes problems for anything you are attempting to defend, and becomes the strain of moving. Taking the hits in a way that prevents the intended injury allows for protecting of others, but tires in a different way... and occasional bruises or breaks.
... Deflection and avoiding, I think, focusing on those.
no subject
Let me try it again.
no subject
[ He has to stop and think how to word it. ]
Even if one is sturdy, with phrases like "made of stone" for how hard it is to budge them, continuous movement, or holding ground while taking blows [ And here he tries unbalancing Felix again. ] is tiring in another way. Like standing for hours, or holding an arm out for a long time.
no subject
If that's true, this will take some doing, because I would not rate myself very high in terms of endurance.
no subject
There are ways to build up endurance. Searching the library will likely give ideas for ... patterns of movement to attempt to build strength as well. Simplest might be to get weighted bracelets and anklets, and wear them about daily activity. Always take stairs. ... I would probably recommend holding the practice blade and a stance for a few minutes a day.
[ Its been a while, he's thinking hard on how to make this work. ]
