You know, where I'm from no one bothers to even print books on paper anymore. Everything is done digitally and through the extranet, including means of communication. I never imagined I would be using such backwards means for such things-- magical journals? Laughable at best and hardly secure.

I never really realized how much I took technology for granted before my arrival here. I guess that's to be expected from a quarian. We thrive off living on space ships, not some castle made of rocks. Even structures like this are rare in most parts of the galaxy and I have to admit I fear how structurally sound it would be under attack.

Even the elevator here is so slow that I've only gone up two floors since I started this. Though I guess I really shouldn't complain, it's better than taking the stairs. Though why not do something better with the space than walk everywhere? I know the technology here is limited, but there's bound to be something suitable enough for the castle.

It would depend, I suppose, on the manner of attack you envision, but castles are built for defense; more oft than not, they are designed with warfare in mind.

This particular example is quite unusual, I will grant you, but it would be sound enough, I think.

That may be true, but where I'm from even the largest castles hardly compare to modern structures. That's not to say they don't have their faults too, but rock is quick to turn to rubble.

That's a good question, I honestly haven't considered it. I'm not sure I want to be the one to try it either.

You're right, but this was a little more than I bargained for. I'll survive, but honestly my whole life has been centered around the use of technology-- It's part of what makes my people who we are.

If it's work you're looking for, perhaps you could assist those in the city by helping them find a means of energy? A generator of some sort that would allow minimal use of electricity. The city was recently purged of all electronic and "modern" conveniences. It would keep your hands busy and also earn you some friends if successful.

I have nothing against walking, but you can't deny the benefits that technology has to offer.

I guess I can't. I certainly miss the freedom of flying. But technology can also do as much harm as it can good.

I don't know how things work where you come from, but in my world, digital means of storing information couldn't really be considered "secure," either.

Nothing is ever completely secure when it comes down to it, as long as you know what you're doing. [ Trust her, she's a hacker herself and knows all about that. ] But there's little to no encription on paper books. What if the wrong person were to their hands on it?

None on regular paper books, sure, but these aren't exactly regular paper books. They might be more secure than you think. I've heard talk that it's possible to filter messages to one specific person.

It's a flamin' medieval magic castle. You ought to be happy it got some amount of usable technology. 'sides I hardly think it'll be targeted by some sci-fi Doom Ray.

Yeah and you missed the whole magic aspect. It teleported all of us to Venice in 1600 or something. Got any tech which can do that, ey?

This may come as a surprise, but space travel existed long before Earth's "1600 Venice". A "Doom Ray" is highly possible at any point in Earth's history, magical world or not. From what I hear it's best to expect almost anything here.

Yeah maybe space travel if the people which goes on about aliens abducting people's right. But hardly time travel. We went back in time, not through some spaceship. I went to bed in the castle and woke up the next day in Venice. If a magical castle can do that then what threat's a Doom Ray? 'sides owt around here's created by the bloody castle. I hardly think it would let itself get harmed.

You'd be surprised at how secure this wee magical book can be. Y'just hafta learn ta be specific in who ya write your filters to. Learn ta bend an' exploit the rules, that sorta stuff.

Trust me, I know all about exploiting rules. I also know how easy it is to bypass the rules.

Print isn't something you see much anymore, but books are downloadable on data pads. You can have a thousand on a single one. Far more convienent than books if you ask me.
