Aunt Eri is a lawyer! [Conan jumps on the chance to change the conversation topic.]

She's always really busy with trials. But sometimes Uncle Kogoro investigates things for her.

Wow, that's quite the family business. [Reminds her a little of how Martha and Alexis help Castle back home. She's not sure when her own with with the NYPD became a family matter, but it definitely predated her and Castle becoming an item.] You get a chance to do a lot of that here?

....Not exactly. They don't live with each other, and they argue every time they meet.

[And yet somehow never considered divorce.]

Sometimes! There have been a few cases here. But its difficult, because there is no legal system or official police force here. And most of the people in the castle prefer vigilantism.

[themuse]

[Kate isn't a fan of vigilantism, but she supposes it makes sense if no official law is ever implemented.]

Does the castle stay relatively safe even lacking an official legal system?

[deductiongeek]

Not in the least.

[Conan strongly disapproved of vigilantes. He'd seen too many murders that were the result of tragic misunderstandings. So many of them could have been so easily avoided if someone had just spoken to the police or waited until all the information was known.]

There have been several murders recently. And that is even apart from the other things that happen in this castle.

Seriously? Is there anybody that does anything about it?

[Because if there isn't, there certainly is now. Even if Kate doesn't have a badge to back her up, she's not going to let murderers run around unchecked.]

No. You worked on several of the cases when you were here before. [And he'd worked on them as well.]

But there is no kind of legal or police system here. Even if we catch a criminal there is no court or prison. Only the dungeons in the castle.

So, what. We just lock up killers in the dungeon until... they apologize?

[She huffs.]

At least I did somethin' useful.

Or until someone get loses interest. There's no system to it at all.

[Conan had been frustrated about this for the last two years. He could solve the cases, but with no system of law there was very little he could do. Not when nearly everyone thought him to be just a overly intelligent brat playing detective.]

There was an attempt a few years ago to put something more formal in place, but it fell apart when no one could agree on what a proper punishment was.

So we got no one running things, no legal system and total anarchy. Great.

[Usually Kate hates politicians, but now's about the time where she feels like one might be useful. It's amazing to her that no one has gotten this place straightened out yet.]

That's about right. And fairly often the castle involves itself, and makes everything here worse.

How do people feel safe here?

They've gotten used to it.

That's it? They just get used to it? [She takes a deep breath and shakes her head.] Well, thanks for filling in some of the blanks for me. You've been really helpful. [It's not sarcasm at all, she's actually pretty impressed that someone so young could be so helpful.]

Mmm, when people have been here long enough they start resisting any kind of change. Its a very human thing to do, isn't it?

No problem! I try to help people out when I can!

Yeah, I guess it is. [She certainly guilty of herself. Kate isn't a fan of change.] I appreciate it. I guess I'll see you around.
