[Today finds David in a place he wouldn't usually find himself, but the Spirals, and the outcome of that whole mess has him thinking about things, so he's in the music room, listening to an album in a particular order, doing his usual floaty meditation thing as he gives his mind over to ruminating on subjects way bigger than himself. At some point after Lateralus, David speaks to his open journal.]

So, that whole Spiral thing. Anyone else think...the castle was tryin' ta tell us all somethin'? I mean...spirals, the Fibonacci Sequence...they all point ta expansion, ta spreadin' out an' breakin' the rules while understandin' what they are, an' all o' that cosmic mumbo-jumbo.

[He pauses.]

There's been a lot o' talk about spreadin' out, an' figurin' this place out, inasmuch as it'll let us. I'm not as up on my info as I probably should be, I guess, cuz I dunno where we're at with that. Anyone care ta fill a bloke in? I'd love ta help, if I can. If for no other reason than ta understand this prison we've all been stuck in, maybe make it less prison if we can, aye?

One could think of it in reverse as well. Spirals could also be symbolic of coming together. Everything leading to a center point or a commonality.

Aye, that could be, too. Some kinda convergence or somethin', leadin' all the scattered bits o' this world, the people who've gone missin' back inta the fold maybe.

[He pauses.]

Or I could be talkin' outta my ass, an' this could all be random, a wild goose chase ta keep us occupied. Either way, it's too noteworthy a thing ta brush off, as most around here do.

Not to say that I am brushing it off, but the problem with a message as cryptic as this is that is can hold multiple meanings. Often it's difficult to understand without the proper context, and can be interpreted differently depending on viewpoint.

Assuming, however, that one of our suppositions is correct, what would that tell us?

Aye, that's true too. Things can't ever be simple an' straight ta the point, can they? Always gotta be riddles wrapped in enigmas in a bloody pandora's box, with a lock designed by the bloody toymaker.

Well, either spreadin' out or bringin' all rogue elements in, it seems like the castle wants things ta change. That seems ta be the most obvious answer, anyway.

Things here always change. The greater question seems to be towards what that change is trending.

Anyone's free to walk away. There are plenty of Outsiders.

Aye, that's true. I wonder what becomes of a person when they decide ta take off? I've seen the maps an' all, an' it seems like there's not many places ta hide, unless you're the woodsy, outdoors-y sort.

Then you've been looking at the wrong maps. There's a lot more space in the Dead Zone than there is around the castle. People who remain outside have found ways to operate with technology, anyway, using some kind of power core.

But anyone new who wants to go exploring out there risks encroaching on their territory. They're a pretty exclusive club. Try to join it and you may get killed before you can say you're a friend.

Aye, I got that impression from the maps I saw. Is it true there's some sorta outer edge to the Dead Zone?

Aye, makes sense. Whatever those folks have out there that's allowed 'em ta live free o' this place's probably worth protecting.

Yes, I suppose. I haven't ever been into the Dead Zone, though, so you're better off asking someone else about the expeditions out there.
