[It's 2am. Pitch is lounging by the pool, in the dark. He's chosen the middle of the night for this because he figures most of the Castle will be asleep and unlikely to bug him (which, of course, means people definitely should come bug him).

And then he decides to make a journal entry. Call it an experiment, to see who else is awake.]

Quiet, isn't it.

[His tone is ominous. He doesn't actually know whether or not this is a "calm before the storm" situation, but he definitely wants everyone else to think it might be.]

I listen in on people's nightmares, give nightmares when I can, and often spread fear wherever I go without even trying. Is that something you have a problem with?

Nah. That's just your nature, no helping that. This is more of a...premeditated attack sort of thing.

I, amongst everyone in this castle, knows we can't deny our natures. That's just asking for trouble.

Oh, I have a few naysayers here.

But when they're mortal, that's to be expected.

Yes, well. Mortals do tend to have a very narrow view of things. Not their fault, they only have such a fleeting lifespan, after all.

And such narrow experiences. Things are either evil, or good. And the things that make them feel good are always the good ones.

They don't understand the quote-unquote evil stuff is just as important. There has to be a balance, or there would be nothing but chaos.

And the chaos that would come from too much of their fun stuff would be just as unpleasant, eventually.

Of course it would. Just look at Sodom and Gomorrah.

Horribly. Stomach churning stuff.

Pretty much. A lot bloodier, too, really.

Then what do you do, exactly?

I pull the strings, here and there, just cause the smallest of upsets. Humans tend to do the rest themselves. You only need to piss off one of them, and it'll be like a domino effect of sin going through the lot of them. Enough to keep things in balance, not enough to tip the scales.

Mm, fear can be very similar. Did your world have witch burnings, by any chance?
