003: An Unexpected Appendage

[Romana is wandering the Castle late at night carrying a baby (goldencirclet ).  He's been fed (sort of) and is now sleeping in her arms. Romana is a bit at a loss for what to do.  But she is singing some old Gallifreyan songs, whether they're "hymns" or "lullabies" is anyone's guess.

She doesn't have her journal with her, it was forgotten in the mist of worrying about an upset infant.  Romana is currently dressed in her nighty, a housecoat and slippers - so enjoy embarrassing her at her lack of dress as well.]

[this here is a night pony and as such, she's clip-clopping down the hall late at night, going to wherever night ponies like to go.

A pause as she notices the baby in the human's arms.]

Ah. I am glad that Goku hath found a caretaker.

[Romana is startled by the voice.]

What? Oh! The baby? I'm... I'm not his caretaker. I found him in a room. I didn't think the Castle would be so foolish as to bring such a defenseless one here.

[PAAAAUSE.]

Wait... did you say Goku? You know him?

[walkin' closer]

I found him in his room as well, when I went to investigate a most interesting aura.

'Goku' is the name on the journal I found in his room.

[Romana looks at the sleeping child, her voice softens a bit, almost in apology.]

He was in such a state when I found him... I didn't even think to look for a name.

Nevertheless, I am glad that thou hast found him. I do not know the first thing about human foals.

[one wonders if she might have tried to get him to walk, so that the predators won't gobble him up.]

[Romana sighs.]

Nor do I... I'm not human myself and my race... our younglings aren't quite this defenseless.

[she looks curiously at Romana. Man, all you human-like things look alike.]

Thou seemest to have done an admirable job, thus far.

[Romana offers a small smile.]

Thank you. I feel like I am doing everything wrong....

[hmm. The baby's not crying at least. That's a good thing, right?]

Wouldst thou like some help?

[Romana nods.]

He needs a nurse maid... I don't know enough about human children to do more than keep him quiet.

[a wingshrug] Perhaps a reference book or two would be useful. I know not where thou canst find a mother at this time of the night.

Research is... difficult here. I am used to pulling up any information I need rather quickly. But, thank you for the suggestion.

Ideally, I would find his parents.... Or take up a few choice words with the Castle.

If thou believest that the castle will listen to reason, then by all means, ask. [sounding skeptical at best]

On the other hoof, I believe this is a loss of sorts. He was outfitted in clothing more suited for an older child, not a foal.

I have heard of these losses... There are certain things I can no longer explain to others. It's not that I lost the understanding, I simply cannot explain it properly to others.

[She looks down at the baby.]

You think the Castle did this to this child? Why? It's not like it's a loss for him... we're the ones who must care for him.

It is more efficient to merely change one creature and in doing so, inconvenience others as a result.

I do not like it.

[As if others do.]

I thought one loss would be all that is needed, but this? I didn't sign on to take care of infants.

[No matter the compliments she gets. A part of her is not a mother.]

And I did not 'sign on' to be ponynapped by strange magical castles and taken away from my duties - and yet, here we are.

[Romana looks up at that.]

Duties? What duties?

[simply] I raise the moon and begin the night.

And one must not forget the paperwork. [sounding like she wish she could]

[Romana chuckles at the image.]

You "raise the moon"? You mean your moon isn't in orbit around your planet.

[Time Lords are scientific.]

So where do you store it when it... isn't in the sky?

The other side of the planet. I was under the impression that it works the same way here.

I cannot speak for how it is here, however in my universe... the objects in the sky are influenced by science. Individuals cannot control them...

The celestial bodies? [a smile at her inside joke.

A bit teasingly:] Perhaps they are merely far more reserved than me and my sister.

[Romana knows what she did there.]

I have studied it for many years. If they were controlled by individuals, I would know... As I said, that is in my universe.

[agreeably:] Of course. [any further debate would probably head into religion territory]

Art thou an astronomer?

[Anything but religion.]

I have studied most sciences. Astronomy is one of them.

[Well, astrophysics, but who's splitting hairs with this one.]

Thou shouldst meet Twilight Sparkle, a purple unicorn filly here. She is most passionate when it comes to studying.

[headtilt] Although I am not sure how much of her curriculum consists of magical studies and how much consists of sciences.

Perhaps I will speak with her and find out...
