Right, so, recent events have gotten me to thinking. How many people are left here with any experience in the supernatural side of things. Ghosts and monsters and so on.

[Danny chuckles awkwardly.]

I guess I just got to thinking about it, because dealing with that kind of thing was kind of my job back home. And if stuff like last month could happen here? I kind of want to be more prepared. I mean, I can duplicate myself, but I can't be more than four places at once. You know?

Only ghosts. [The irony is not lost on him]

Yeah, you mentioned something about ghosts before. What kind are you used to dealing with?

[There's a bit of a pause, discomfort and thinking all at once]

Wizards of my school don't have classifications for ghosts. That said, I have known ordinary ghosts. I presume the ones who died with strong emotions. As well the ones raised by necromantic working. In a similar vein...fantômes. Malevolent spirits.

Um, did you just say phantoms?

Fantôme.[He repeats it with emphasis, like a teacher patiently correcting someone's grammar. It does, however, sound much the same, only a bit more French] I do admit there is a definite resemblance. What is a phantom, according to your definition?

Um, me? But also it means pretty much the same thing as ghost.

[It's a good thing Danny isn't actually his student. The journal is getting a pretty flat glare from him as it is]

Then let's go back a step. How do you define a ghost? Assume you're talking to someone who has no knowledge of such things.

According to my parents the experts? An odd manifestation of ectoplasmic energy and post human consciousness. Although considering they also think that ghosts can't feel pain and only exist to make the lives of the living miserable, I've never put too much trust in that.

And what do you think? [He's not being an ass about this either. He really wants to know.]

I don't know. I mean, we exist. Obviously. Does it really matter what we are?

It generally helps to understand what you're dealing with in order to deal with it, and knowing why a ghost, or spirit, or phantom - however you wish to define it - exists could very well be the key.

I don't get it. Isn't it enough that ghosts exist without trying to figure out why?

[Felix sighs, obviously collecting himself]

No. For example...[And dammit he hates talking about this, but it's relevant] I once had to lay a city full of ghosts who been unable to cross over because the conquering civilization who was to blame for their deaths also destroyed the ritual mazes which were connected to the their goddess. Laying them was a matter of recreating a maze for them to walk, but it took a knowledge of what had created them to reverse it. [Which is dancing wildly around the fact that he doesn't remember most of this because he was crazy at the time]

[Danny shrugs, a little confused by the story. ]

I've never met a ghost that wanted to move on.

[He's not ready to give up yet]

And that would be a difference. Something about the ghosts of your world makes them happy to be as they are, I would assume.

There's the Ghost Zone, I guess.

Which is?

The parallel dimension that ghosts live?

And being half ghost, can you go there?

Oh, yeah. Easily. My parent have a portal in the basement. Even humans can go through.

What is it like? [Genuinely curious now]

Um, creepy?

I mean, its kind of like an endless green void. With islands floating everywhere. But its kind of dangerous to explore, because every door and island leads to a different ghost's lair and most of them don't like company. And everything is constantly moving around.

Plus, humans aren't solid there. Its kind of like how ghosts are intangible in the human world. In the ghost zone humans are the ones who aren't solid.

Fascinating. I wonder if my own world has something similar.

And ghosts just...live there?

Some of them do, yeah. Some of the realms have hundreds of ghosts living together.

But some of the others just spend all their time trying to break into the human world and cause trouble.

Presumably because they hate humans for some reason, or is that just their nature?

Depends on the ghost, I guess. Some of them just don't like humans, and some of them can get power from humans.

And some of them just want to pick a fight with me.

Do you inspire prejudice in them as well as humans?

Weirdly, not really. Some of them are just mad at me because I stopped them from attacking humans. Some of them just like fighting with me. Maybe they're bored. [He shrugs.]

And some of them just want to fight me because I'm different. Skulker's been trying to turn me into a hunting trophy for years. Though he keeps changing his mind whether he wants my pelt on his wall or his bed.

Neither is any less disturbing.

Tell that to him. I've been trying to get that through his head for years.

I doubt I could change his mind even if I had the change. Some people simply have proclivities that others would find abhorrent.

Monsters were something that were just.. everywhere. I am not sure if they fall under "supernatural" if you are talking about something you can see every time you look out of the city gates.

What, seriously? Did you have to fight them?

... I am not the best to answer that - monsters have rarely bothered me, unless it was a point where they were sick, or too hungry, or it was mating season and I was too close. [ He actually has one in his room right now- ]

... Ordinarily, they attack any human or Krityan they come across.

Um, why?

[Even ghosts usually had a reason. Even if it was sometimes really dumb. ]

I mostly assume territory. Perhaps they view that Terca Lumireis is theirs, not belonging to the odd two legged things.

... Or maybe because a great deal are considered edible by humans. Why anyone would choose bat meat, I do not understand.

Wait, can these monsters think? Or are they more like animals?

It depends on the monsters you're talking about. [ Duke that isn't helpful- ]

Most monsters, perhaps just a little more than animals. The Entelexeia don't belong to the same group as monsters but for sharing a similar appearance, and are generally just as if not more intelligent than humans.

Do fairies count as super-natural?

I guess? I mean, do you think that would be something to worry about here?

I don't think so. I'm the only fairy here that I've seen.

Maybe if we're lucky we won't have to worry about it.
