[Every person has a breaking point. The point at which no matter how strong you are, now matter how hardened you are by experience, there's a limit to how much shit you can take being flung at you.
Katniss had already been dangerously close to approaching hers when she'd been pulled off that hovercraft and straight into a new world, and her time in Paradisa certainly hadn't drifted her off of that course. Everything that has happened since she's been here has only been one confusion or frustration right after another, culminating in Haymitch's last stunt. The more she thinks about it, the angrier...--
There's only one thing to do.]
[Followers of the Mockingjay]
[You can all thank Gale for giving her the name of that filter. She doesn't have much to say today; just a few short, terse words. But she is Making A Point, and she is taking every effort to ensure that she is being heard loud and clear.]
Whatever you're planning, I'm done. You can find someone else for your games.
[Then a pause, before she adds--]
And don't bother looking for me.
/[end filter]
[Cinna]
[After writing this filter down, her voice changes quality into something... a little less harsh. There's one important matter that she needs to settle before she disappears for a while, and there's only one person who immediately comes to mind she trusts enough to take care of it. ]
Check on Rue while I'm gone. [She's about to close the journal for good when an afterthought hits her. The next small set of words comes after another pause.] Tell Peeta too.
[Because, for some reason, she'd rather not speak to him herself right now.]
/[end filter]
[She's all but determined to put as much distance as she can between herself and the castle when something catches her eye. Enough to cause her to momentarily put those plans on hold. Off in a field over to the side of her, it looks like there are.... targets.
Not unlike the ones in the Training Center back in the Capitol. The one she shot a bullseye into while the Gamemakers ignored her.
But any chilly deja vu she might be registering will have to be put aside, because there's a certain practicality associated with this. Where there are targets, there might be weapons. And currently? She has no weapons.
Well, that's good enough reason for a detour.]
[[OOC:Sorry, this is completely unrelated to lobsters! Katniss will be having a little teenage temper tantrum to herself out in the woods (in response to recent events) to cover my hiatus next week :) And action at the shooting range is open to all!]]

[[OOC:

Katniss
Hell, it's how he handled things when he was her age. Before he found booze to escape to instead. So his tone is firm, but there's a touch of an apology in there]
One week to get your head straight. You’ll keep your journal with you and report in to me every five hours, even if it's just to say 'still alive, you jackass'.
Fail to do this, or stay away longer, and I’ll bring you right back here and you’ll be confined to your room until I decide I can trust you not to be an idiot any more. We clear, Sweetheart?
Haymitch
He has no right.
It doesn't matter that there's a touch of an apology in there; either she doesn't notice it, or she chooses not to. When she speaks back to the journal, it's steady, but almost venomous.]
You don't control me.
Katniss
Well, because she's a difficult, annoying, stubborn pain in the ass, but that's besides the point. Haymitch sighs, counting to five under his breath]
I'm not trying to control you, Katniss, I'm trying to keep you alive. You're prepared to go waltzing off into a place where you have no idea what's around, if the Capitol is controlling this, nothing.
But if that's what you feel the need to do, fine. Do whatever the hell you like out there. Scream at trees, shoot at birds, snare rabbits, I don't give a damn. All I'm asking is that you let me know that you're not dead. Me and you don't even have to have a conversation for that. But even you should be able to afford those of us who risk everything to keep you from shuffling off this mortal coil this little courtesy.
Haymitch
He should just save everyone the trouble and stop skirting around the truth.]
Because I'm the Mockingjay? [That's the reason why they do it, she'd heard it herself. It's nothing personal. Why should she bother?]
Katniss
That might be reason for some of them, one thing's for sure, it's not because of your glittering personality.
[She's had a bad time of it, of course. Rue and Cinna suddenly not being dead can't of helped matters. There's a considerate pause, before he decides to throw her one little truth] 46. That's how many kids I've had to watch get thrown to the Games only to get slaughtered. Did it ever occur to you that I might be sick of watching kids under my care die?
no subject
yep. he turns at the sound of her footsteps, but he knows them so well that he probably didn't even have to look, even here]
Hey, Catnip. ... Heading out?
no subject
Although, she never stood a chance against Gale.
At the sound of that voice, she stops straight in her tracks. For a moment or two, she simply stands there, frozen like that, as if she's thinking about something. (Contemplating just walking on? Who knows.) But eventually, she turns to address him.]
Maybe.
no subject
Be careful out there. I don't know if the plants are the same as the District or not.
no subject
It's the kind of easy communication that she might have once taken for granted, but is now grateful hasn't been lost.]
I won't eat anything I'm not sure of.
no subject
[it might seem like "easy" communication, but it's taking a self-control he hadn't realized he had, not to insist on going with her, on making some move to try and get The Old Katniss back. he's starting to realize, especially here, just how impossible that is]
no subject
But the point of this exercise isn't about that. It's about being on her own with no one's help. It's about showing them that.... she's not a piece. That she's her, she's self-sufficient, and they can't mold her the way they want to.]
There'll always be something. [She'll make it work. Starting with a perusal of this little rack herself.]
no subject
-- and then he realizes that that is probably EXACTLY what being dropped into an Arena is like. the tension that rushed into his face is just as visible and quick to leave. she's not a victor for nothing.]
You're right.
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound like I doubted you. I don't.
no subject
Hello. Nice day for some practice.
no subject
A social call with a stranger had certainly not been a part of that plan.
Though she does stop, she won't smile back. Or initiate an effort to introduce herself. Just watches with a neutral expression.]
I'm not practicing.
no subject
Too bad. This place hardly ever has anyone using it.
no subject
But this is enough to get her attention.]
Why not? [Maybe this will make her goal easier....]

no subject
Regardless, Sam is at the end of the aisles, shooting his way through the target in front of him.]
no subject
But, nevertheless, she recognizes skill when she sees it. Which might have been the reason behind the decision to hang out at the other end of the aisles to watch him momentarily.]
no subject
Hey. Something I can help you with?
[he may not own the place -- that would be Oliver -- but he knows his way around well enough.]
Katniss
I shall. I have been meaning to meet her properly since we arrived here.
Cinna
It's nice to know that, as how many things can be strange here, there are some things that don't change.]
Thank you.
Katniss
Certainly. Take all the time you need, Katniss.
Cinna
[As annoyed, frustrated, and tired as she is by everything, she knows running away from it isn't a permanent solution. But right now... it's the only one she can think of.]
no subject
Your arrows won't fly true if fired in anger. I learned the hard way.
no subject
Be careful. And please bring your journal with you.
