[Belle has been spending the past few days exploring the Castle. Today she's has decided to brave the kitchen and all of it's technological wonders. She's already decided to avoid the microwave because of the note next to it, hasn't noticed the stove yet, and already inspected the running water, which she is in love with. Right now she's opening and closing the fridge.]

...What makes it cool food? Is it magic, or something else?

[Geoff pauses at the doorway, watching her inspect the fridge.]

I know not, my lady. It could very well be magic. My friends have yet to teach me how to use these things.

[She turns to look at him.] Well, I suppose we are in a magic Castle.

[Hey, not-quite-disney princess, hope you don't mind the giant mouse casually walking into the kitchen.]

Ice and electricity, if I remember right, but since this is a magic castle, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

[She stares for a minute before she realizes that she is, and it's not polite.] Ice and electricity. I prefer that answer better than magic.

[Galadriel pauses behind Belle, smiling and remembering her first days in the castle and how puzzled these same things had left her.]

Nay, it is not magic. Electricity, they call it, though I cannot explain it as well as I would like. [She has the vaguest notion of how it works, but it's not much.]

[Belle turns to see the very tall woman standing behind her. She didn't even hear her come up.] Someone else told me electricity too. I've never heard of it. I suppose it's one of those things from a different world.

[ As Kate enters the kitchen, she can't help but smirk in amusement at the woman playing around with the fridge. ]

Normally? Thermal insulation and a heat pump.

Could be magic in this place, though.

[She's turning that over in her head, because that's a different answer than she's been getting.] I suppose it would be either.

[He frequents the kitchen, so it's no surprise to see him there. Hey, it's Ukitake. He watches amused, then approaches.]

That much isn't magic. It's complicated, but it's a technology that allows electricity to power it. It's been a while since I read about it, so I can't tell you much more.

[She closes the door, and turns to look at him.] I've heard about electricity from other people. It's very amazing to have something that just...cools food. We don't have anything like that where I'm from.

[she can see where some people might consider it magic.] Are you from a place with no electricity too?

Well that depends. Are you talking about the food's temperature or its social status?

...What? [You have confused her.] What do you mean?

Apparently it is something called electricity that is behind it, though the way it was described to me, it sounds like some form of magic itself.

I've heard about it. Though I'm not sure if it's really magic.

[Ray's wandering in to grab a soda just as she voices her curiosity, and grins] Oh, it's a number of things. Electricity, mostly, though, that's the driving force. You must be new here.

[he offers her a hand] Ray Stantz. Welcome t' Paradisa.

[She shakes his hand. She's getting used to being offered a hand to shake instead of curtsying.] I just got here about a week ago. My name is Belle.

Ah...it's run by electricity! That helps keeps the refrigerator cold! [this is sadly the extent of his knowledge]

[She laughs.] I've heard that, though not what it's called. A refrigerator. It seems fitting.

[Jacob's in the kitchen as well and happens to overhear her question. After a while and after everyone's been so helpful, he leans over a bit, lowering his voice.]

If you wanna know the truth about the cold food? [He looks around before continuing]

I heard the castle imported a bunch of tiny gnomes to pack that box with ice all day long.

...Gnomes? [She is very skeptical.] If there were gnomes, we would see them.

I don't know...Everybody else said it was electricity. [She doesn't always trust magic.]
